Jurgen Zopp dumps Christian Lindell in the opening round – Skistar Swedish Open 2012
Estonian star, Jurgen Zopp, stomped over the local wildcard entrant, Christian Lindell, in straight sets at the Skistar Swedish Open 2012 on Monday. He joggled up a 6-2, 6-2 victory against the 20-year-old to book a place in the round of 16 at this ATP (Association
of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 series event taking place in Bastad, Sweden.
The Estonian challenger displayed his best tennis to outsmart the world number 434 in their first meeting at this clay court tournament. After pulling out the victory in one hour and 28 minutes, Zopp comfortably advanced into the second round and took lead
in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series by 1-0 against the Swede.
Zopp stormed into the Swedish dirt and drew the first blood in the opening game to jump to a 2-0 lead. He then swiped his remaining serves with conviction and cashed in another break opportunity in the seventh game, eventually sealing the opener by winning
six games to two.
Ranked 84th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Zopp entered the follow-up set with same rhythm and got the coveted break in the opening game to take the initial lead. Apart from losing his edge in the very next game, the Estonian
capitalised on another break chance in the third game and leaped to a 3-1 lead. He held his remaining serves through brilliant defensive skills and broke his rival’s serve once more to clinch the set with a 6-2 score line.
Summing up the Estonian’s performance, Zopp spilled more errors and produced a lower first serve share of 58 per cent as compared to his opponent’s 64 per cent. However, he amazingly marked 22 out of 29 points on it and capitalised on five out of 11 break
chances to earn the glory.
Next up for Zopp is the conqueror of the match between seventh seed Filippo Volandri and the local wildcard entrant, Michael Ryderstedt.
Jan Hajek from Czech Republic will accompany the Estonian in the following round. He was broken once but capitalised on three out of five break chances to manipulate a 7-6(3), 6-3 score line.
