Jurgen Zopp outclasses Mischa Zverev in the qualifying competition – BNP Paribas Open 2012
Qualifier’s 13th seed, Jurgen Zopp, tumbled over the German contender, Mischa Zverev, in a see-saw three setter at the BNP Paribas Open 2012 on Tuesday. He clobbered a 6-2, 1-6, 6-1 victory over the world number 206 to advance into the final qualifying round at this major hard court event taking place in Indian Wells, United States.
The Estonian seed stepped off gas in the second set but sought his rhythm again in the decider to pocket the match. He committed more unforced errors but broke the 24-year-old’s serve four times to secure a spot in the final qualifying round at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Masters 1000 event.
Zopp stormed into the Indian Wells Tennis Garden and after breaking his rival’s serve twice, he pocketed the opener with a 6-2 win. After the left-handed German held his serve in the opening game, the Estonian went on a five-game tear before Zverev could hold on. He then held his serve once more and clinched the opener with a 6-2 success.
The Russian-born went berserk in the following set and bagged the opening three games in a row before Zopp could hold on. He remained his spark lit and unleashed another barrage of groundstrokes to not only strike out the last three games but also pulled out the equaliser with a breadstick.
The 23-year-old sought his momentum again when it matter the most. He jumped to a 3-0 lead with a break of serve. After Zverev kept his serve in the fourth game, the Estonian broke his opponent’s serve once more and clinched the decider with an exceptional 6-1 score line.
Overall, the highly energetic Estonian fired four ferocious aces and despite manifesting a lower first serve share of 54 per cent as opposed to Zverev’s 72 per cent, he tremendously availed 30 out of 37 points on it. Zopp dusted away seven out of nine breakpoints he came across and capitalised on four out of six break chances to his advantage.
Zopp will square off against the local wild card entrant, Rhyne Williams, who upset the seventh seed, Marsel Ilhan, in straight sets to set-up this meeting. The American never faced any breakpoint and converted half of the four break chances to his advantage. He produced a lower first serve share of 68 per cent in contrast with the Turk’s 82 per cent but amazingly availed 32 out of 38 points on it.
