Jurgen Zopp upsets Denis Istomin to advance to the second round – US Open 2012
World number 80, Jurgen Zopp of Estonia, gave a splendid display of tennis to stun the 33rd ranked player from Uzbekistan, Denis Istomin, in four sets 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 in the opening round of the last Grand Slam of
the season, the US Open, in New York on Monday.
Zopp and Istomin won their serve in the opening seven games to take the score to 4-3 in the latter’s favour. The Uzbek contestant hit a blow to Zopp in the eighth one and capitalised on it to win 6-3.
The beginning of second set was less steady, as Zopp broke Istomin in the fourth game and held his subsequent serve to take a 4-1 lead. The Estonian maintained his advantage till the end to clinch it 6-3.
There was no strike from either of the two players in the first four games of the third set, evening out the score at 2-2. Zopp struck in the fifth and consolidated on it to go up 4-2. Serving to stay in the set at 3-5, Istomin
was unable to hold and dropped it 3-6.
Zopp and Istomin put on a brilliant display of serves in the fourth set, as they did not lose their serve in the first 11 games to take the score to 6-5 in favour of the former. The Estonian hit a blow to his Uzbek rival at that
moment and closed it 7-5.
The 24-year-old fired 11 aces and made four double faults in the entire match. On other hand, Istomin bombarded 18 aces on Zopp and committed just two double faults but the Uzbek player did not well on the crucial moments. The
right-hander could not converted five of the six break opportunities he created and failed to save seven of the 11 he came across. Zopp kept his first serve percentage on 52, grabbing 51 of the 65 first and 35 of the 61 second delivery points. The 6ft. 3in.
tall pounded 11 winners and committed four unforced errors.
Zopp will now face the sixth seed, Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic, in the second round.
