Question:

Jury Duty serve cancellation?

I am a full-time student in San Diego and I have been called for a jury duty in Los Angeles where my parents live. I have postponed this jury duty twice before, but I can not make it to the third jury duty (which is coming up) because I am now living in San Diego due to attending a college there. I do not have transportation to go back to Los Angeles and I do not want to spend money on Amtrack train to go to Los Angeles just to serve for a jury duty and I need to save money due to being the poor college student.

Is it possible for me to get exempt from the jury duty in Los Angeles for the third time?

  1. Contact the court and tell them you do not live in LA anymore and they will excuse you.

  2. "I do not want to spend money on an Amtrack train to go to Los Angles just to serve for a jury duty"

It is incredibly irresponsible and immature to deny a basic service to your country just because it's not financially convenient.  It is because of the stability provided by our justice system, and the jurors who serve as part of it, that you can even attend college.  Jury duty is a duty, one of those things we do to give back to a country that (mostly) protects our rights.  If you're not willing to serve on a jury, then you ought to give up all the rights our government protects - it's only fair.

It can be a drag, and it can be inconvenient, but it's a very small price to pay for all the advantages you have as an American citizen.

I believe there are exemptions for college students, and that's something to look into, but your "I don't want to spend money" excuse is just whiny and extremely angering.

  3. Yes, well let me clarify.  I live in Texas.  They should provide you with a form that states why you can't attend.  If there is no such form call them and let them know that you are living in another city at this time.  They should have removed your name in the first place.
