Jury duty and pregnant?

I'm from Michigan and I got a letter today that I have to serve in jury duty. I called though to tell them that I am a stay at home mother breastfeeding and so they dismissed me until June 2008. But we plan on getting pregnant after the new year so I might possibly be 5 months pregnant along at the time I will have to serve Jury Duty. Do they allow pregnant woman to serve? Will I have to call again if I'm pregnant or just go in and they'll see that I'm pregnant and dismiss me? What are the chances of having to do this when I'm young and starting a family!! I actually got the first papers to fill out for jury duty while I was pregnant with my first baby.

  1. Its our civic duty to at least show up for Jury Duty, you might not even be picked for service and then the chances of being put on a Jury that lasts a long time are slim.

I would say to still show up of you are pregnant but not about to go into labor. Woudlnt you want the same courtesy of your peers to show up if you were involved in a trial?

  2. Pregnancy is not a disease. Quit using it as an excuse for why you can't fufill a civic duty.

  3. It is your civil duty as an American Citizen pregnant or not.

Why is it that Americans complain so much about stepping up in America?

Why is it, we - Red Blooded Americans cannot unite for the common good of OUR Country?

Lets all just sit at home and cry and complain while other countries invade our soils and change our culture!!!!

  4. You'll get two jury votes.

  5. Depending on the length and type of trial and how far along you are in the pregnancy, yes, you can serve.

  6. Most jurisdictions will allow pregnant women to serve. Of course, 2 months along is a little different than 9 months along.

Depending on the court, you might be able to call in - or you might have to go in. The third possibility is actually going into the courtroom for the jury selection.... they'll ask if there's any reaons why you can't serve - you can explain that your baby is due on xxxxx, so you may be dismissed if the trial is expected to run that long. If it's a short trial, you might be empaneled - but it shouldn't be an issue if you're serving for 3-4 days total.

If there are any potential medical issues (ie, can't sit for long periods of time or something else), you could bring a note from your doctor explaining the issue.

    Good luck,

    Calif Deputy
