Question:

Jury summons, form lost?

About a month ago I was sent a summons for jury duty. I kept my half, stuck it to the fridge and sent the other half in the very next day. The day came for my duty and my number was not selected so I threw my half away. Then I get a call from my father. He recieved a notice addressed to my parents house stating that I never sent in the form. It had gone to more than one address before it found it's way to his house because my parents have moved a few times since I moved out about 13 years ago. So one why would they sent the summons to my house and then the notice to my parents house and two is there any way I can prove that I sent the other half of my summons? I am calling the circuit court tommorow because in the notice it said I would be held in contemt for never sending in the half of my form, which I did of course. What should I say?

  1. Yeah!  Call the court tomorrow & explain the truth.

    But don't stop there.

Write a letter to the Presiding Judge of the particular Circuit court, explaining all the events to date; your conversation specifically with the name, date, time of the circuit court employee.

Send the letter, keeping a copy on file or @ your yahoo address, via USPS certified mail, return receipt requested.

Attach the returned receipt verification to the file copy of your letter for any future reference.

In that letter, include a paragraph provided your current contact information with your telephone number & e-address.

although jury duty is an obligation of citizenship, the ineptitude of the public administrative systems is monumental; citizens need not be put in jeopardy for simple clerical errors.  So, I advise the best defense being an evidentiarily reliable offense.

    Best of luck to you.

  2. Tell them the truth - that's the best you can do at this point unless you find the other half.

    Good luck!

  3. You in a heap of trouble boy!

No really, just explain what you just did in this question and I'm sure they will be able to find the mistake.

  4. You're fine, if the letter went to another address it's a valid excuse.  Most likely you had two separate summons, one to your address and the other to your Dad's.  The one you had, your number was never called but the one sent to your Dad's your number was called and that's why there was a separate notice to your Dad's.  This happened to me a couple times and I was never found in contempt or fined.  I wouldn't even bother calling the circuit court.
