Question:

Just Some Questions About Ballet?

by  |  earlier

I'm 13.

I did ballet when I was like 4, but after that I stopped.

I want to do it again, but I have some questions.

What should I wear the first day?

How often will I have class? Like how many hours a week? Or how many days.

And you can include other details too.

:]

  1. Many studios will let you observe a class before you begin taking classes...others won't.  There are also a lot of different techniques to consider (Ceccetti, Russian, ABT, NYB) and which one feels comfortable for YOU.  Usually you start by taking two, 90 minute classes a week.  If you like it, do more.  Since you are 13, you can wear a plain black leotard, either long sleeve or tank style, with ballet pink tights (plain pink tights are REALLY pink) and pink or beige ballet shoes.  Make sure they are leather or a canvas/leather combonation.

A class is broken down in this way:

Barre exercises (plies, tendu, etc.) - 45 minutes

across the floor / traveling (jete', turn combonations, etc.) 15

Center floor work (turns, petit leaps, petit allegro footwork)15

    Combonations (actual dance) 15 minutes

    Enjoy!

  2. I would talk with the studio teacher who you are looking to take from, and ask these questions.  Lessons are usually about 1-1 and 1/2 hours.  Depending on many factors, including how old you are, how advanced you are, and other things, will depend on how many days a week.  If you intend to really go at it again, it takes a lot of dedication and physical and mental work and stamina.  I'm not trying to scare you, but you need to understand that it is hard work.  It is also the most beautiful dance types that one can do.

  3. You should wear a black leotard and pink tights. I f you are not sure what to wear, go to your studio and ask for the clothing rules and stuff.

I have been dancing for 8 years, so my schedule may be different from yours and not all studios are the same, so you can go and ask them.

I take 3 classes a week. One is two hours (pointe class) and the other two are one and a half hour.

You should not be pressured to be on pointe. You first need to get ready to use those shoes, or you will get hurt. Be patient.

Some people just quit ballet just because the have been X years on ballet and haven't gotten to pointe. That is just overreacting, you will get to be on pointe someday!

Oh, and pointe hurts btw. :P

Hahaha. You need love and dedication to dance ballet! :)

    Good Luck with your classes!

  4. Ask you instructor about the dress code for your class- some schools are strict on dress, some are not. If you are not able to ask prior to class, a basic, safe  attire would be pink tights, pink ballet shoes and a black leotard

In most schools you can sign up for  as many classes a week as fit your time allowance and budget- they are generally about an hour or so each. I suggest two classes a week to start off- one is Ok, but not really enough to build your muscle tone and flexibility.

  5. What to wear the first day:

I would recommend wearing a black leotard and pink tights as well as ballet slippers. And have your hair in a bun. Check with the instructor though to be sure this is the dress code. Some studios have different rules.

How often will you have class?

Its really hard to say. I would say inbetween 2 and 4....for my studio its only 2 for the adult teen class. But then for my advanced class its 3 or 4. 1.5 hrs. per session.

  6. Your studio will tell you how long each class is. Depending on how serious you are the more classes you will have. But you have to sign up for your classes. If your studio does not have a dress code then you should go to a dancewear store. You should get a black leotard. The style or brand doesn't really matter. Pink tights and canvas or leather ballet shoes. Some teachers will let you accessories by using leg warmers and skirts. You can get different color leotards but you should check your schools dress code first.

  7. I had the exact same predicament as you!! I took classes when I was very young and 2 years ago (I was 11) I had decided to pick it up again. :)

Everything really depends on the studio that you are going to. Some places are more relaxed about it then others. I would personally recommend that you wear a leotard with tights and if you feel uncomfortable you can put tight fitting shorts over that. The classes also depend on the studio. For my studio we only have one class per week that's an hour and 15 minutes long. On the other hand though one my friends (who goes to a different studio) has class 3 times a week for two hours.

Good luck with dance, and I hope that some of this is helpful. :)

  8. Usually, you will have a dance class once a week for one hour.  The first 15 or 20 minutes will be barr exercises.  First day of class, a dance leotard and tights (they keep your leg muscles warmed up) and just basic ballet slippers.  Make sure your slippers have an elastic band strap sewn into them to secure them to your feet.  You'll love it!  Its wonderful exercise and a great way to enhance grace.

  9. Hey! I'm 14 and I have been doing ballet for a while. We have class like an hour and a half three times a week, but other studios may be different.

What to wear: If I were you, I would wear a black leotard and pink tights.

My ballet teacher says that a full ballet class is an hour and a half, so idk if that helps but yeah. haha

    Also, good luck!

  10. I'm 13 too.. I've been doing dance since i was 3.

When you're signing up for classes, ask what the dancers normally wear. Most pre-professional schools have you wear a black leotard, pink tights, and pink ballet slippers. But I know of other not so serious schools that let you wear any color leotard or shorts and a tank top. So I would just ask.

Well it really depends on the dance studio and what level you are placed in. You will probably have class 1-2 times a week since you're just starting out with ballet (when you were 4 it was more of a creative movement class).

I have class 5 days a week for about 9 hours. If you want to be more committed to dance, then sign up for more classes, but remember that dance is a lot of work, is hard, and takes up a lot of your time.

In the meantime, while waiting for classes to begin in September, start stretching to get more flexible. Good luck and have fun! :]

  11. Im 14 and im in level 1 ballet and i have class for an hour and a half only once a week.  if you are taking just ballet you might want to go more often.  i also have jazz, lyrical, tap, and production so thats why i have such a short ballet class.

wear a black leo (probably no sleeves, tanktop) and pink ballet shoes and pink tights.  your hair should be in a tight bun.

  12. U should wear a leotard, tights and a skirt (skirts r optional). It depends on what ur dress code is 4 ur studio.

Again, it depends on your studio on how often u'll have class. But my friend is 13 and she stopped when she was 6 and started again when she was 12 and she takes it twice a week 4 two hours.

    Some other tips:

    Bring lots of water.

    Wear the correct shoes.

Try your best even if you know u r not doing it right

  13. OMG! You are exactly like me!!! I am thirteen and I started ballet when i was like 4ish but i quit.  I am taking it again now and i totally know what your going through. I'd wear a leotard and tights, with sweats over them. that way, if everyone is just in a leotard you can just take off the sweats and go! Wear ballet slippers, (I wear the capezio brand and i personnally don't reccommend elasto-splits.) And convertable tights are better than non-convertable. I have class 4 days a week in the summer and 3 days a week during school for two hours each. When I had just barely started, I took 2 days a week for 1hour and a half. It kinda depends on your teacher. If you live in Idaho falls/ammon-ish area I defineatly reccommend Idaho Ballet theater...It rocks. It is by a daycare center in ammon, a little before the IF mrs powells. Or in IF it is next to the new rocknacks center. The teachers are GREAT! I hope this was helpful and you enjoy ballet!!!
