Just a little common sense please???

Alright, I have a question for all of you, and I just want to see what is the best route to go.

A little over a month ago, I traded a very nice paint mare that I had to a lady who said her daughter had just lost her horse. I return I got an Azteca mare. Now this is not the bad part. All she told me on the trade was that the horse had a big motor and liked to move out. Well a couple days after I got the horse home I started working her, and all she will do is trot, and she gets angry and will not walk at all when asked. I have tried bit after bit, and even hackamores, and this horse still defies me and will not walk. Well I asked this lady a couple days ago what she did with the horse. And I guess it took her a long time to gain the horses respect, and that she acquired the horse from someone who just wanted to get rid of her because they were scared to death of her. She said she had to do roundpen work with the mare, all on the ground, and mount and dismount, then after two years the mare and her were getting along fine. But she never told me any of this on the trade, the only things she said was that this horse was such a nice horse, the only things she said in a not so high manner was the horse had a big motor and liked to move out. She never said the horse was defiant, and would take forever to earn respect from. I told her everything about my horse, how when I got her, I retaught her because she reared and bucked, but how she was an excellent trail horse and was ready to go back to barrel racing, and having fun.

Is there anything that I can do. I don't have 2 years to earn this horses respect, and I pay the way for her (I am 20), and I can't even use her over the winter.

I am so frustrated and upset I don't know what to do =[ *tears*

  1. This is where the term horse trader comes in.  I'm not sure if there is anything you can do.  does the horse canter safely, if so maye you can canter her until she decides that it might be easier to slow down a it.   Maybe it would be worth it to get a   a second opinion  about this horse, a trainer might be able to shorten the process of getting this mare manageable

  2. You have made the little girl happy.  that's what you have to focus on.  You made the trade, and you have to live with it.  Let this be a lesson.  In the future, get everything in writing, and do a bit of research before entering into any agreement.  Talk is cheap....that's why we have contracts.

Add..you don't have proof that the horse wasnt exactly as she represented it to be, and that you didn't do something to bring on this behavior.  Her emails only strengthen her case.  The fact that you rode the horse before the trade only supports her if she claims that the horse was as she stated it to be before the trade.  Unless she offers to trade back, which is doubtful, you have to live with this.

  3. Talk to the other lady and tell her all about it. Tell her upfront that you want your mare back. If she wont give it you back, then I guess you're stuck with the new one.

If you are stuck with the new mare try using the Pat Parelli training methods. Get yourself a few of his DVDs and try to gain her confidence.

Personally, if I found the horse of my dreams like your old mare, then I would never sell for the world. I would also go and look at the mare and ride her etc before trading with her

  4. You got screwed! Poor you!

Go back to tha liar and tell her you want your horse back. It is totally nasty to trade you a crappy horse.

  5. Take the horse back to her and ask her to give you your mare back, after all if the horse respects her like she says she does, then she shouldn't be too upset about switching back. In the future though, make sure not to give in to this c**p. Maybe next time you should ride the horse first or make a trial contract for a week or two to see how you like the horse.

  6. I don't think you can get your old horse back, that's not how things usually work.  Send her off to a trainer, it will cost money, but will be better for you in the end.  This is just another lesson learned.  It also just goes to show that not everyone is honest in the horse world.  You are an extremly nice person, and this little girl better be d**n grateful that someone as nice as you gave up you pride and joy for her.  Sorry about your loss...

  7. Just take the Azteca back to the previous owner, tell her that you want your paint back, and make sure that she takes care of her own problem. You shouldn't give up your favorite horse in the world for a horse that won't respect you in a month. Take her back NOW. Don't worry about the little girl, she'll get a different horse or ride the Azteca mare.

  8. I agree with Jackiee<3....you totally got screwed over....honestly this lady gave you false info about the horse...and her daughter can find another horse, because you got a crappy one and there are millions of other kids horses for her...if you want your old horse back, the lady should trade back with you after all of her lying about the new horse....

Good Luck with Everything...dont get suckered in to deals...the lady knew exactly what she was giving you & she still didnt care...so dont feel bad for her...she will find a different horse...

  9. I agree with Gallop 100% !!!!!  Next time you'll have to take the time to check the other horse out completely.  & Taking the time to work with the horse is going to build your relationship. It makes for a better horse in the long run!!

  10. I might get blasted for this but I would sell this horse to someone who is willing to work with ther and can handle her. Dont hand her off the the first person who comes around cause you know how it feels to get screwed. You will probably not get much out of her but if she is flashier/prettier than your horse she might be able to be trained as a show horse.

Take the loss and get a horse that works for you. The lady screwed you (Im thinking she made up the story about her daughter to dump the crappy horse). You might be able to fight her for selling you the horses under an the pretence that she was a good horse and would be perfect to ride right away. Chances are though you wont be able to get your mare back.

Im so sorry for your loss. Looked like you really loved her and had an amazing bond.

  11. In UK we have a rule:  Item but be suitable for purpose bought.  This means that the item you buy must live up to the expectations and do the job it is supposed to.  You need to consult a solicitor or if you offer the trader the horse back and pay a higher price for your old mare you will probably get her back quickly!  It probably all boils down to money in the traders eyes.  Good luck you never know what you've got until you lose it!

  12. Did you ever try/ride to horse before you traded her if not then that is your fault

go back to the lady and tell her you want your horse and it was not a fair trade
