Just a little something I noticed at work...?

So I work at a restaurant, nothing fancy, just a little steakhouse and bar. Over the few months I've been working, I noticed a pattern among the guests: most of the time, the guy gets a steak and the lady gets chicken or a salad. And this wasn't just once or twice, it's pretty common. Rarely do I see a woman order a steak/man get a salad or chicken dish. I was just thinking about this, gentlemen, does it make you feel more masculine to eat red meat? ladies, same thing.

  1. I think women tend to be more health conscience since in our society women are held to a higher physical standard. Therefore women eat leaner foods, while men go for what tastes good.

  2. I don't know necessarily *why*, but I like red meat, the rarer the better. It doesn't make me feel specifically any more masculine, but if I'm at a restaurant, I order what I like. She often gets steak too, however...

  3. I prefer my steak really rare - rare enough that most restaurants overcook it for legal reasons.  I prefer to grill my steak at home, where I can control the amount of doneness.  When I go out I generally order something that's difficult to cook at home, or that's hard to mess up.

  4. it just depends what mood i am in. i love chicken and i also love red meat. so i just order what im most in the mood for.

salad, is something to eat before the main meal comes.

  5. No it dosent make me feel more masculine to eat red meat i just love the taste and it fills me up more then the chicken or salad does

  6. I actually read somewhere (when studying up on diet) that men require the protein from red meat more than women do. Women's protein requirements are different than men's. That might have something to do with our cravings being different. But, when it comes right down to it, I think that women are just very self-conscious about what they eat (or are observed eating) and are more conservative at the dining table. For some silly reason, people seem to think that eating a steak is more "gluttonous" somehow than eating chicken or seafood or whatever. Society pressures people to make dining choices just as much as it does to make any other choices that have to do with how we are perceived in the general population. It's ridiculous! I'm sure if it wasn't for people worrying about what other people think, they would do things a lot differently.

  7. Part of it is culture/masculinity.  Part of it is that it just tastes better.  Meat is good, but beef is real good.  Vegetables are okay, but meat is just more appealing.

Personal preference.  You should also consider that it can be addictive.  There is testosterone and protein in beef.  There is also fat.  These things wet the palate.  Lettuce just doesn't have that effect.  There is a tendency to put fats and oils on vegetables to make them more appealing.  Think of salad dressing.  Sorry, but that's what we buy.  We buy salts and fats and sugars.

Women have other issues and concerns.  They tend to think about their appearance as much as men think about women.  Hence, they are more concerned with that than with food.  Men like food more than their appearance or health...at least they used to.

  8. Wow, I've never noticed that.

    I love steak. :]

  9. I don't really care about how masculine or feminine my food is (as if you can assign gender to food); I just eat whatever I feel like. I usually skip red meat, though, but only because I feel exhausted after I eat it.

  10. i like steak

  11. I would be the exception.  I like a good Filet Mignon.  Maybe the women are watching their weight and go for a more lean dish.

  12. No - I think it tends to make some women feel like fat slobs to order a 16 oz. Porterhouse.

Nothing personal, but you know it's true.
