  1. Onkyo is a really good system.  My setup is significantly more than 600, but you will get good results from them, Harmon Kardmon is good too.

As far as REALLY good sound, that all depends on your ears and the sonic properties of the room you are going to put it in.

  2. According to the November 2006 Consumer Reports, the Best Buy Recommendation is an RCA RTD258 complete audio system [with speakers] selling for $190 and it's output is stellar.

    Good luck!

  3. You can get a reasonably good HTiB kit for that money from Onkyo, Denon, and Yamaha.

Here's a system from Yamaha available from Best Buy:

And a few ones from Circuit City:

    From Onkyo:

    Hope this helps.

And, as a side note regarding the response below, DO NOT buy RCA.

It's low cost, but you get what you pay for.  RCA isn't synonymous with good sound nor is it synonymous with good quality and for good reason: they cater to the lowest common denominator where sound quality is not as important as something that's cheap to produce and will sell in high volume.

Serviceability is also a problem as there's basically no parts and no service information or other ways to preserve and recover your investment in the event that it ever breaks.  Parts selection in a majority of modern RCA equipment I've seen is also usually inferior.  Design is another factor, being enough to work but not enough to ensure long term reliability, ease of service, and superior performance.  If it breaks out of warranty, it's meant to be discarded and replaced; very wasteful.

Don't trust everything that "Consumer Reports" tells you.  It's a magazine that has its merits but, when you're shopping around, that publication should never be the say-all, end-all for providing information to help you make a sound judgement (no pun intended).

  4. I have the Onkyo ht-sr800 set up and we LOVE IT! The louder it gets, the crisper the sound. It's amazing.

  5. Sound is relative to the listener, everyone has different tastes and expectations for the system, so you really need to listen to the system before you get it.  Also, I highly recommend bringing in your own source disc (movie and music) that is typical of what you will be listening / watching.

With that out of the way, take a look at this Onkyo system  It should be towards the top of the HTIB chain for Onkyo.  This is a refurb system, but it comes under your $600 mark.
