How does water travel through plants?

And how does the structure of the xylem vessels allow water to travel from the roots to the leaves?

Last question - How does osmosis help with this?

  1. Water enters through the roots to get the water to travel up the plant (I am forestry so I will use a tree) the stomata (holes in the leaves) create a low pressure system.  Water travels to the low pressure system using the capillary action (finger on a straw) to pull the water up also.  Osmosis is just a word that says the cell walls of the xylem allow water to go through.  That said the xylem cells are actually dead the only cells alive in a tree are the cambium, the root tips, buds, and leaves.  I feel like I am missing one other alive group.
