Just a random question to think about...?

Why do Kamikaze pilots wear helmets? If they are suicide bombing, won't they die anyway? Perhaps is it for dogfights, (if they even go into them) to make sure they don't become injured so they can successfully crash. Or maybe it's so they'll feel more like to the others?

Thoughts, suggestions, theories, ideas, anything. Go for it....

And here is the correct answer:  The pilots of the Japanese Imperial Navy did not wear helmets.  They wore leather caps lined with fleece. and fitted with a fleece-lined ear and neck band around the back and sides.  The purpose was to keep the neck and ears warm.  The "helmets" that Kamikaze pilots wore were just standard issue leather caps, issued as a sign of membership and a mark of honor.

Complete and correct uniforms were important to Japanese soldiers and sailors, and so the Kamikaze pilots were provided these.

    That's the reason.

  5. Besides being part of the standard uniform, the leather helmet/cap contained the speakers for the radio. And while they were on a one way trip, they still needed to be able to talk to each other and ground control to get going.

  6. Helmets contained earphones, clips for holding the oxygen mask and speaker (if no throat mikes) and with fleece to keep the ears warm.

  7. How do you know they wore helmets?
