Just about to buy a new boat with a 30hp outboard.Dealers all quote different manufacturers. Which is best?

Evinrude E-tec. There is no other best answer.

All are good when they are new.  I like Mercury the best.

Right now Evinrude E-Tec are the highest tech best motors out there, tehy have the best warranty, best horsepower and economy for the size of the engine.

The main difference is that Evinrude E-Tec are two stroke engines. 2 strokes have always pushed better horsepower, but have used more fuel and created more emissions. The tech has caught up enough that the mileage and emissions are now better on the Evinrude than the competitions 4 strokes.

Do your homework go to a magazine store and buy a couple of marine boat magazines , they give you tests  etc on the latest , good and bad.

All top brand boat motors are good. Most have very good motors that do the job they were designed for. All have had, at one time or another a lemon or two. The biggest difference is the dealership you buy it from. Do they stand behind their products? Are they easy to work with if, heaven forbid, a problem does pop up? Do they have a good reputation in your area? Answer these questions and you will the answer to your question.
