  1. there are certain amino acids which are useful for developing muscle mass, such as lysine

  2. I think you have it a bit mixed up. All protein can be used to build muscles. Protein is the building block of cells, and muscles are cells. However, there are various AMINO ACIDS which help the protein get utilized. A "complete" protein has all the amino acids needed to help your muscles use it. An "incomplete" protein is missing one or more essential amino acids. Complete proteins are found in animal products, soy, buckwheat, amaranth, hempseed, and quinoa. Incomplete proteins can be turned into complete proteins by combining two incomplete proteins that compliment each other by filling in the missing aminos (a legume + grain = complete protein). Anytime a name is preceded with "L-" it is an amino acid. For example, L-Glutamine or L-Arginine. However, it is also very common to refer to them without the L, so just Glutamine or Arginine.

There are 3 groups of amino acids.

BCAA's (Branch Chain Amino Acids): Leucine, Isoleucine, and Arginine are your BCAA's. About 1/3 of skeletal muscles utilize BCAA's. They work to stimulate insulin production from your pancreas, which allows your body to more readily absorb protein.

Essential Amino Acids: These cannot be made by your body, so you need to consume them in your food. Foods that have all your essential aminos are complete proteins. The role of your essential amino acids is to utilize the protein for cellular building and muscle synthesis. Without all the essential aminos, the protein will not be properly used, and can instead get converted into and stored as fat.

Non-Essential Amino Acids: These are not as important to consume because they can be synthesized by the body. However, when you take in an extra amount of protein (through supplementation, for example), you want to make sure to take an amino supplement.

While you may think, "I only need BCAA's and Essential Aminos so I can build muscle," the fact of the matter is that all the amino acids have their own special things that they do for your body. For example, arginine is used in nitric oxide products because it is a nitric oxide precursor. Glutamine works with your immune system to help you recover faster, and also hold onto more of your muscular gains. Leucine works to improve testosterone production. Carnitine helps breakdown and metabolize fat. Tryptophan helps relax you and is used on its own as a sleep aid.

    Hope this helps!

  3. Sort of, though it works backwards. The protein myostatin normally limits muscle growth, and if you obtain mutants lacking this protein they grow abnormally large muscles.
