Question:

Just back to figure skating after a break and having some trouble?

I'm just getting back into figure skating after a 9 year break (had a couple of kids! LOL) and I'm finding that if I work on my one-foot spin for 30-45 minutes, I get really dizzy and I still feel nauseated for about a half hour after getting off the ice. I don't constantly do spins when on the ice (I do a spin, then work on the waltz jump or something, then go back to spinning). How long do you think it will take for me to get used to spinning again? And what are the next things my coach will probably have me work on after the waltz jump and one-foot spin? I like to look up info on stuff and get familiar with it before learning it in lessons...this helps me make the most of my time with my coach. Thanks for any help you can offer!

  1. I have been skating for 5 years myself, and when I would be working on spins I would get dizzy quite easily. When I first started spinning it took me about a month or so to get use to it, but you could be different.

To prevent getting sick to your stomach, take a rest after doing about 3 spins, or less than that if you have a really weak stomach. Go work on other moves or if your coach wants you to only work on spins, just sit down for a minute or so. I usually just sit and rest. Make sure to drink water while your resting, too.

You probably will start working on footwork, like mohawks, 3-turns and edges. Also possibly salchows, toe loops scratch spins and half flips.

Maybe after you learn all those you will be doing combination jumps, like waltz jump-toe loops and salchow-toe loops.

Remember to stay focused and have fun! :-)

  2. I had the same problem after taking some time off during college.  I would get very sick to my stomach and pretty much just have to call it quits for the day.  I used to warm up with spins, but figured out I couldn't do that anymore!  Don't worry though -- if you keep doing what you're doing and get back into skating, it goes away.  Maybe save your spins for towards the end of your practice session, so it doesn't ruin the majority of the session, but you still work on them.  I still get dizzy -- I always have, but I don't get nautious anymore from spinning (unless I do a lot of them in a row during a spin class!).  I even told the younger girls I skate with, "Never stop spinning cuz it is no fun getting back into it!"  :)

  3. i've never actually gotten dizzy (except sometimes on a layback i will see stars)  but i usually just try not to think about the rotations and just focus on my position or if im really comfortable with it, the next element in my program

  4. I think after taking a break you just got un-used to spinning. I took only two weeks off and then what I got back on the ice and spun I got dizzy really easily. I think when you are on the ice a lot you get used to it, but when you take abreak it's like your entire brain takes a break from it and you are no longer used to it. I am not sure why you would still feel dizzy and such after you are done skating. Maybe you should talk to you coach and see if it is normal. I don't usually feel that way. I am usually dizzy like maybe ten seconds after I come out of my spin at most. So I am not sure.

After the waltx jump you may learn either a salcow, or a toe loop. Or even possible the flip jump. Some coaches teach them in different orders. And for a spin you will most likely learna scratch spin.

    Hope That Helps.

  5. Spinning with no breaks for 30-45 minutes is probably not a good idea. If your coach insists that you practice your one foot spin for that long at a time then try and take a short break every 5 minutes. When you're spinning, to prevent vertigo focus on a stationary object (like something on the wall)

After waltz jump you will start learning salchow jump and toe-loop and maybe half-flip. There are some good tutorials for these jumps on youtube.

After the one foot spin you'll learn a scratch spin, back scratch and once you have enough confidence with spinning your coach will start you on camel spin and sit spin.
