I took my 2 dogs a walk there. 1 is a 4 month old pup the other 9 years old. The 9 year old was off the lead and when I saw another walker and dog I called her and she came back to me so I can put her on the lead. The other dog ran straight to us as it was not on the lead. The man kept shouting its ok, its only a pup itself but I said ok but my 9 year old dog is still protective over the pup and maybe he should put a lead on his dog when he sees other dog walkers. He started shouting at me that his dog was not aggressive which I agreed with him that it hadn't been aggressive but how is he to know how other dogs would react to it charging at them when they are on a lead. I got really upset walking home as he was shouting and swearing at me. Do you think I was wrong asking him to put a lead on his dog?

Thanks

  1. You were quite correct and the other owner was obviously a 'there's nothing you can tell me about dogs' type.  NO DOG is 100% to be trusted - most are predictable but it seems sensible to take simple precautions when an unknown animal is around.

I congratulate you on your sensible attitude.

  2. You were absolutely in the right to do so. There are probably leash laws where you live. Start carrying a stick, cattle prod or something such as a stun gun (if legal) so that you can deter dogs like that.

  3. No, you were completely in the right. He was wrong to shout at you. He will learn when he gets in trouble for having his dog off lead because it causes a fight and severely injures another dog. Just because a dog shows no aggression at first does not mean that he will not show aggression if he meets a dog that is on a lead that shows aggression towards him. Don't worry you did the right thing by asking him to put his dog on the lead. He needs to have more control over his dog like you do over yours.

  4. Not at all, he was in the wrong and he shouldnt have reacted how he did

  5. i don't think it was wrong! some people have really short tempers so don't feel bad!

a lot of people (that i know) don't put they're dog on lead so some people just don't care about it!

  6. Don't fret over this the man is an idiot. you were in the right.

  7. Absolutely not.  I keep my dog on a lead at all times in public as I know she can be aggressive to other dogs. The amount of people who let their dogs off lead that have no recall just baffles me. One man shouted to me that his dog was quite friendly and just carried on walking in the opposite direction, leaving me struggling to part the two dogs. I shouted that mine wasn't and that she'd probably rip his dogs face off if he didn't come and get it... he got the message and collected his dog.

  8. i yell at dog walkers that don't have their dogs leashed. i guess i'm supposed to know that your huge dog is friendly. keep your dogs leashed.  you were not wrong. don't let him intimidate you. this always happens to me on the hike and bike trail. you should carry mace or some spray just in case.

  9. Not at all. I have seen many examples of 'well behaved' dogs going crazy and getting over-excited. Many owners (Like many parents, I suppose) can not accept that their little darling could ever mis-behave!

  10. No, you absolutely were not wrong to ask him to put his dog on a lead not only for your dogs safety, but for his dogs safety as well.  I ALWAYS put a lead on when I see another dog coming.  I hate when I am walking my dog and other people allow their dogs to run up to me and my dog.  You never know how they are going to react.

  11. No you weren't wrong! If his dog is running up to people he needs to either train it or restrain it - he has no idea how other dogs will react to that, or even people. Even someone with a dog might not like it, they might be ok with their dog (obviously) but nervous of others.

Even if you were out of place to ask this, if you did it politely he was still totally in the wrong to be shouting and swearing at you.

  12. He was probably trying to socialise his puppy with other dogs and did not know your dog was aggressive as initially your dog was off the lead, you should socialise your puppy to ensure that it does not become aggressive like your older dog, sorry to hear the man shouted at you, do not get upset just try to socialise your dogs more contact a trainer from the following link

  13. No ofcourse you should of asked him to put it on the lead, the man sounds like a complete idiot.

  14. Well it IS the law that you have to have your dog leashed up.  He probably took your request wrong and was trying to reassure you that his dog wasn't a threat.  On top of that, he thought you were yelling at him.  I think it was all a misunderstanding but he was in the wrong.

  15. No he's just a w*nker

If his dog isn't aggressive I'd be surprised because he obviously is and dogs often pick up their owner's mood.  You're right, he was wrong.

  16. I tell idiots like this that I'm not concerned about their dog but I'm concerned what my dog might do to their dog.  I would also mention that I carry a can of mace to break up the possible fight.  If both dogs are on leash, than fights and damage can be prevented.  BTW my dogs are quite friendly with strange dogs.  However the other owner doesn't need to know that.  My leashed dogs have been attacked by unleashed "friendly" dogs more times that I want to count too.

  17. no all dogs need a walk but u know if u see another dog to put ur dog on the lead

    ur right

  18. no you wasn't wrong, dogs should be on a lead in public areas at all times, when i take my dog for a walk i never let him run free and he seems happy enough with his 15 foot extender lead.

as for his dog running over to yours if that happened with my dog he would have attacked it no matter what

  19. Not at all

  20. He sounds really immature and stupid. Don't be upset by it, just give your pup a cuddle and you might feel better :]

  21. no you werent wrong. You only had ALL of the dogs's best interests in mind

  22. no, you did just the right thing, for all you knew, that dog could have been aggressive and harmed either one of your dogs. you were being a resposible owner by putting your dog on the lead when you saw another one coming, thats what i do too. you were right, his dog could be harmed if he doesn't put it on a lead when he sees other dogs. don't worry about what he said to you, just remember that you were doing the right thing, and its his dog or even the man himself who is going to get harmed if he carries on the way he does. its nice to know that there are good, resposible owners out there like you. hope this helps! :)

  23. just tell him with a smile "Hopefully the cops won't see you walking a dog without a lead."

  24. NO, some people need telling off.

  25. No you were not wrong at all. I have a dog and the joy I get out of walking her is often ruined by other dog walkers who don't care what their dogs get up to. My dog, whilst not viscious can get stressed and snap when dogs run up to her suddenly, she's getting older and just doesn't like the rough play as much, out of courtesy I tell other dog walkers this and more often than not put her on the lead. To me if someone sees you coming and puts their dog on a lead it means their not friendly, so I don't let my dog run over to them, I do not understand why some people either don't recognise that or choose to ignore it. I've had a few people shout at me for asking them to watch their dogs, even when I've explain it's for their dogs safety. Dog walking is like any other environment in life, there are some people that think they own it and that they are the only ones that matter, and to be honest I think some people get off on the fact that they have a tough dog that could fight anything else.

It's upsetting but try to enjoy the rest of your day by knowing you did the right thing for you and your dogs.

Edit: If this is in the UK, there are no laws about keeping your dog on a lead in public areas like parks.

  26. no you weren't wrong, and a dog might not be aggressive but something might trigger them to not like that particular dog. my 12 yr old dog got attacked by a really gorgeous gentle 2 yr old larger dog who's been living with us for 9 months, you'd never imagine him doing something like that, but because on that particular day there was a female dog around things changed...

  27. No.  It is common courtesy and you were totally in the right.  It really cheeses me off when people say "oh its alright.  He doesn't bite, ha ha ......" while their dog, off the lead is sniffing around my nether regions with hackles raised.  I am not a dog person - lost my left eye to a dog bite when I was a kid from a dog I had known since early infanthood.  I am sensible and even though I am scared I will stand still and deliberately not look at the dog as I know that they sometimes misinterpret facial expressions.

A responsible dog owner will keep his dog away from anyone, scared or not.

  28. nope you were right.

  29. Your too cool. Don't worry if your right or wrong about it. Your THE MAN cause AlfaMel said so!

  30. You were walking your dog without a lead (initially) so why should he have to put his on a lead?
