Im 18 and have been suffereing from a racing heart and palpatations and making myself ill because im so worried about them so the doc put me on these 'beta-blockers' he didnt take my blood pressure or heart rate i just discribed my syptoms, i have linked them up to being related to my period as i have them 7 days before my period slowly getting worse until i come on my period were they seem to slow down and when i come off they seem to stop, im just a bit concerened that these tablets wont totally slow me down, im only 18 and just concerened about taking them as he didnt check my p**e or blood pressure altho i did have it checked a couple of weeks ago and it was 137 over 80 and my pulse was 90bpm. just any advice would be greatly apreciated thanks x

  1. The autonomous nervous system (the system you can't consciously inflence) uses simply said two receptors to stimulate:  alpha and beta receptors

Stimulating them usually means activity. Some organs have more B than A  and  vice versa.

If you stimulate the B receptors on the heart, the heart rate goes up.

If you shield them off your heart rate will slow down: Hence the name Beta-blocker.

Propranolol is a simple short acting B-blocker.

NOTE: stimulating your B in the lungs will widen your airways, so B-blockers can narrow the airways, that's why asthmatics really shouldn't take B-blockers, as their airways are already narrowed due to the inflammation etc.

  2. ur heart rate should be 60-100bpm  at rest..this drug will slow the heart  rate down.. 137/80  good enough.. 90 is a bit fast  but in range..what would it be if you were standing up?? mail me let me know??
