  1. I took this route a few years ago in a small and inadequate rental car.  I was gonna get to Playa Flamingo a bit late to meet the realtor who had the keys to our rental house, so I looked at the map and decided to take a shortcut from Sardinal to Flamingo.  It was just dark and we headed off down the 'Monkey road".  what an experience.  It was so dark (no lights nowhere) and with no signs whatever, I resorted to navigating by the stars (I mean that) and after fording several rivers (No bridges) and deep mudholes (The road is not dirt-It's deep mud) we came out in civilization near our destination.  My daughter says to this day that it was the closest she ever came to death (At least from fright).  Be careful with those road maps-just because there's a little line on the paper doesn't mean it's what we call in america 'A road'.

The trip is too far for a taxi, but there are several good shuttle (6 person van) services, like Autobus who will take you there for about $30.  The cheapest form of ground transportation is by bus which is another experience in itself.  Plenty of them though.  If you want to drive around and check things out, which I recommend, then get the rental car.  Just don't underspend and get a little squeeze box.  Buenos suerte and Pura Vida.

  2. If your adventerous you can shuttle to one of the rental car places and get a 4X4.  From there go S.W {away} from Liberia to Comunidad and take a right on 151. about 5 mi. later you go through Sardinal, go left towords Nuevo Col'on. Just past there the road splits and you must go left {follow the signs to the "Zip Line" place. Stay on this road all the way to Portero and when you hit the edge of town stop at Marco Polo's on the right for a congratulatory Pina Colada {to die for} and for having made the trip. Say HI to Orlando while there {he's one of the owners and a very nice fellow} and eat anything on the menu as it was the BEST food I found in CR. Just a bit farther west of there you go left {it's the only one and if you get to the market you missed it by 100 yds}. Follow that south to the stop sign and go right, next stop sign go left. You'll basically be following the bay around to Flamingo, at the next stop go right and into Flamingo. You cannot get lost there as it looks confusing but it's not. Make your way to the next stop sign and to your right is Emerald Shores Realty {Jorge is great at giving directions} and to your left about 150 yds on the right is Maria's {food & drinks}. Bare in mind that once you leave Sardinal the road turns to dirt and stays that way till leaving Marco Polo's, but it cuts about 40 minutes off the trip and you see some beautifull country. Your U.S. cell phone won't work there but we rented a Sat Phone for $100 for 2 weeks and it worked everywhere. Good luck.

  3. Call the hotel and ask them to send a car to pick you up. Maybe they have a shuttle from the airport.

Also, there are taxis and buses outside the airport.
