Just bought 2 Arabian mares?

The old man I bought them from said he is trying to find their papers. He did register them but moved his office and being a lawyer he had lots of paperwork.

What association do I contact and can I get the papers with just the former owner's name?

  4. I've actually done the same thing, once with a QH and once with an Arabian mare.

He needs to contact the Arabian Horse Registry and inform them that he has lost their papers and request duplicates. Since he's the registered owner on record it will be a pretty simple matter of him providing the proper info and paying to get duplicate papers issued in his name. Then he'd have to transfer them to you. They might let him have them reissued in your name but there would still be a transfer fee involved to do that on top of the duplicate fees.

It will be much harder for you to get them re-issued without him (the owner of record) contacting them but could still be done but you'd have to be able to provide proof that they are the same horses as well as get an affadvit from him (witnessed and notarized) that he lost the papers and that he sold the horses to you and sold them as registered horses (it's actually pretty common for Arab owners to "pull a horses papers" and sell it without them).  You'd still have to be able to provide whatever proof they require to prove that they are the same horses they're claimed to be. If they are blood typed and DNA tested already it would be much easier to prove they were the correct horses and get them re-issued.
