  1. More than likely the last owner played around with the timing ans syncronization of the carbs........Do yourself a huge favor and take it to a Merc dealer and have them do a synch and link.  If that is not the problem, you most likely have gummed up carbs and they will need to be taken apart and cleaned.

  2. adjust the clutch

  3. Try reving it while putting it into gear

  4. I just had this same symptom happen to my 1977 omc outdrive.  Upper gear case had leaked oil and was toast.  Had to have it replaced.  Hope yours is something easier to fix!

  5. hi.....  does the  propellor spin freely when the motor is not running...  and then  when not running.. if so  then put the motor in forward gear without engin running.....    it should spin one way or not the other.. ( or be stiff to turn one way) ..  and try the same in reverse..  Make sure the spark plugs leads are not connected.....  so the engine doesnt start when you turn the prop.

If it turns then look at the carbs....  dont squirt in carb cleaner you have to take them off and clean them. get rebuild kits...

I have a 50 hp johnson.. that would idle great  then die in gear. It was blocked jets on the carb... and intermitant spark on the top cylinder...

So check to make sure you have spark on all cylinders too..

If its firing on only one cylinder it will run geat even on muff thne under load it will die... I assume its a 4 cylinder motor..

Email if you have any more questions..

  6. make sure the gas lines are not pinched by something, it happened to us once when the motor cover was placed down on top the gas line, and we spent a bunch of money trying to figure it out.
