  1. every one seems to have covered the subject pretty well for you, but in addition, rule of thumb is when zincs get to 50% of their original size, change them

  2. "The man" needs to get a boating book!  Or join a boating forum, there are many...  BoatUS; BoaterED, etc..

    Is this boat wet slipped.

    Saltwater?

Different types of anodes are used for different type of water!

Zinc, Al, magnesium... make sure you are using the correct ones..

Be upfront with your slip mates, they should be happy to help you out, it's all a big family at the marina, usually.

(as the other responder said, nix the alcohol use in the stove.  George Foreman Grill is OK...)

  3. zinc anodes are relatively inexpensive. Changing is a judgement call-- when they start to look like they are wearing out.

As for the alcohol electric stove--i'm not familiar with it but the idea of a alcohol stove in a boat does not sit well with me.

  4. Zincs are not expensive, and dirt cheap compared to the items they are protecting.. You can easily get replacements at West Marine, or any marine servicing shop or yard...prices range from $5-$30 per zinc

If you trailer the boat or dry store, then i would change the zincs annually regardless of whether you think they need replacing or not.. This is simply good practice, prevents you forgetting and can save you thousands of dollars.

If however you have a slip at a marina, the first year of use I would haul the boat in mid season, say August to check the zincs out.. Most marinas have "short haul specials" in the dog days as their workload is light..

The reason I say check mid-season on the first year is that each river and marina has different issues and stray currents from the dockside electric..... In one place you may find one zinc easily lasts a year, in another you may definitely need two.

  5. I'm sure that your zincs are ok and often last at least 2 years, on a 2855.   Your boat is factory bottom painted with a "hard" bottom paint that should last 2 seasons (summers).  If you "pull the boat" for the winter carefully inspect the bottom paint and zincs, as well as the outdrive(s) at that time.  If you had a survey done before you bought the boat, the condition of the zincs will be in the report.  You should check the electric service at your dock and make sure its in good condition not only at your slip but those nearby.  If in doubt , or you see a bunch of extension cords, ask the marina to check it out.   Zincs for a twin Mercruiser are about $100 or so, the major cost is the "haul-out so schedule replacement along with other regular service.
