Hello!

I just bought a 4 year old QH cross Morgan mare. She is palomino and has great movment.

But today when i was walking her around she seemed very..nerviuos and as if she was scared? She was pushing me eveyr were and trying to bolt.

Is this becaus3 she is in a new place with new horses? Or is this the way she is?

Ill watch her for the next few weeks but i want a heads up soi can start training her that doing some of thoose things is bad.

Thanks!

  1. My horse is like that too.  Your horse is very young however and for any horse moving to a new home is crazy and may make them nervous or scared.  Let her rest in her stall or in a pasture to get used to her new surroundings.

Also maybe talk to her previous owners to make sure there isnt anything physically wrong or if she is usually nervous.

  2. She needs to get use to her new surroundings, give her some time.

  3. That would just be nerves from being in a new place. I had a pony that I bought and left with family until I had settled down in a different part of the country. I then had him shipped to me. For the first week after he arrived I kept wondering what had happened to the gentleman I had before! He was flighty, pushy etc. After a couple weeks he was back to his very kind gentle self. If she doesn't improve after giving her some time to adjust that's when to really start working on the manners.

  4. Just give her time to get used to everything new.  I'd limit what I try to do with her at first..give yourself as much chance for success as you can, by not asking too much.  She'll get better with time.  She has to figure out the pecking order...you'll be a part of that, so you want to be an alpha.

  5. yes, she's a prey animal and has been put into completely new surroundings. Everything is new to her so she's hyper sensitive and twitchy.

Give her time to get used to the new place and it's strange sounds and smells before you form an opinion on her. It's just her natural instincts doing their job.

  6. I had to take my horse to my farrier's horse to horse sit while we were on vacation.. she is usually really good on the ground. best manners ive seen in most, but the second she saw all the other horses she was pulling and pushing and prancing, VERY FLIGHTY! after the two weeks when i came back to get her she was back to her old self... i was told when I bought her not to ride her for two weeks [of course i didnt wait that long] to let her get used to everything new... Give her a week or two and if she is still doing it, invest into parelli. its a dream! even though it is a bit pricey.

  7. My horse did the same thing when he moved to a new home. Most of it is nervous energy, your horse needs to be lunged and taught to relax in this new invironment before being ridden. Ideally you shouldn't ride a horse in its new home for at least 3 days if not more for a more nervous horse. Take walks around the new place letting the horse scout around and figure things out before asking much from her.

  8. it is probably because she is in a new place, did you buy her online or did you go see her at her old barn befor you bought her... if you did see her befor you bought her and she didnt ack like that i garentee it is becaus of the new place... if you bought her offline you never know, also keep in mind she is only 4 and that is still very young...

  9. I just recently got a new twh mare. When i 1st got her, she was VERY alert and walked very fast behind me. i thot she was gonna run over me lol. Turns out, she naturally alert and naturally walks fast. She has calmed down more. your horse was probably just eager to explore her new surroundings. She also probably wanted to meet the new horses. my mare kept trying to run back to the fence when i brought her out. i just tugged the lead rope twice to remind her tht she's tied or being lead and she gave me her attention. yours should be fine:)

    good luck!

  10. yes she is probley very scared not knowing where she is, i got mu new horse not long ago it took him about 4 weeks to settle down. also once they know were they are they test you to see how tough you are on them so she will probley be pushing you and nibbling just give her a smack on the nose and tell her no. she will soon learn.

    Good luck

p.s give her lots of cuddles that will calm her down! :)
