  1. Meters are exchanged if a problem is detected with the meter. Slowing or stopped meters are common, and in the case of the solid-state meters, firmware or display malfunctions.

Power companies have several varieties of residential meters, and it may have been the luck of the draw as to which kind the Meter Specialist/Technician grabbed for a replacement.

Another possibility is that the meter readers may wish to 'scope' or read the meter from a distance, and a mechanical (dial) register increases the range at which the meter can be read.

According to ANSI code C12.1, you can be assured that it is accurately calibrated.

  2. simply an upgrade as the meters are changed out every few years to recalculate them for accuracy.

  3. It's an upgrade, or just call the company, and I am sure they will be more then happy to tell you.

  4. I know, it doesn't seem right, you would think it would be another digital meter but they just want to have another meter to check against and they have plenty of old ones.

Don't worry your meter watt hours will be the same.
