We just bought a 2008 Hyundai Accent. My husband wants to use the radio (with the car turned off) while he works out in the garage. It will be on for about an hour. Will this drain the battery? Will it hurt the life of the battery? Thanks!

  1. Question 1. yes......

    Question 2. yes......

  2. I doubt it will drain the battery completely, just take it down a notch.  You would have to leave your lights on for an hour to take your battery all the way down and even then I'm not sure since the battery is brand new

As long as you don't drain you battery dead or drain it really fast (like a failed alternator so the AC (yikes!) is running on the battery) your battery won't care.  You just don't want to warp the plates (caused by heat from very fast drain), which is what kills batteries

Modern batteries are warrantied for 4 or 5 years, they are pretty tough.  You just don't want to drain them dead.  You can buy deep cycle marine batteries that can take that abuse but cost $$

  3.   Unless he has 300 watt speakers, a good battery will run the radio all day.
