  1. We have a pool, and if or when the SantaAna winds dump all kinds of crud in it...it takes my Husband days to get it sparkling again. Once it is clean, I would recommend covering the pool with a pool cover to help keep the crud out. We did that many years ago and that worked well, ours was called a Solar Pool Cover...and all it was was HUGE HUGE bubblewrap that we cut into the kidney shape of our pool. Bought the 20 ft long aluminum roll it up thing. Still have the roll it up thing but the bubble wrap lasted about 16 months and dissenegrated into the pool. OH YEAH...that was real fun to  clean up for days and days I might add. Spent about a grand for that aluminum thing and the bubblewrap cover. Short lived for sure.

So yes that is ok if the pool is very dirty. I do not recognize what you call "a bag of de".

Keep at it....this can take a while to clean.

edit: We did buy a pool vacumm and that makes a huge difference in how long it takes to clean the crud.

The bag attached to the "jaws" pool sweep gets filled quickly and needs to be emptied frequently when full.

  2. Your pool filter is designed to 'maintain' the water quality, not fix it!  Seriously, you must have quite a lot of foriegn matter, and the real solution is to vacuum the pool thoroughly first, as mentioned in the previous answer.  You may be able to rent a pool vacuum from a local pool supply store.

Then, once everything is working normally, cover your pool!  It is worth it in terms of time and energy saved to install a good-quality pool cover.  NOT one of those 'bubble wrap' looking things, as again the previous answer mentioned.  I't worth it to get a good quality cover.  If you have an in-ground pool its best to get one installed with tie-downs on the deck;  that adds safety as people can't fall into the water when the cover is on.
