  1. Two Words: ROTARY ENGINES!!!

Check out the following excellent links to rotary engines

  2. eap (empty all pockets)

  3. The only differences would be the maintenance of the rotary engine, which is a little different than service on a piston engine.

First, rotary engines have an oil injection system, which injects small amounts of motor oil into the combustion chambers to lubricate the various seals on the rotors.

This means you'll HAVE to check the oil every week or two to ensure you don't run low.  Expect to add a quart every 1000 to 2000 miles.

Next, rotary engines can carbon up more than a piston engine, and the effects of this can be more damaging.  The best way to reduce carbon build up is to rev the engine to red-line everyday if you can.  High rev's are fine in a rotary as they can run at red-line all day long (unlike a piston engine).

And change you oil frequently, every 3000 miles.  Since oil is injected you want to keep it clean.  Some people even go so far as setting up a separate oil supply system for the oil injection supply.  This allows use of 2 cycle oil which burns off better.

Because oil is burnt by design it's better to stick with regular dino oil instead of synthetic, unless you separate the crank case oil from the injection supply oil as mentioned above.  Synthetic oil is designed to withstand burn off better, but a rotary needs easy and clean burn off of oil.

Lastly, some owners also "pre-mix" 2 cycle oil into their gasoline (4 - 6 ounces per tankful) as this helps ensure adequate lubrication.
