  1. A trick I learned from a man that does drywall for a living.

Final sanding... use a nylon scrub pad like you would use for your pots and pans. dampen it and "sand".  This will give you the smoothest finish possible.  Also will show you what it will look like with paint... and show you where you need to work more to make it look the way you want it to look.

The great benefit from this beside the low cost of the materials is that there is NO DUST...

Otherwise use your sander and for the finish pass use a 120 to a 150 grit paper.

  2. 150-200

  3. Electric sander is overkill...it is hard to control and will create more work for you....you will end up eating through the mud and hitting tape. I just used the "wet method" mentioned in an earlier answer and will never go back to sandpaper - very little mess and easy to see what still needs to be worked on.

  4. Use a pole sander with sanding screen.

  5. You can get drywall sand paper from the hardware store. It looks like window screen. It will clog less than regular sand paper. I think that using an electric sander is a bad idea since it will create a lot more dust than hand sanding.
