My 5 year old was just diagnosed with ADHD. Where can I find some literature about it so that I can better educate some of my family on what the condition actually is? My mother is blaming my husband for the fact that my son has it and I would really like to give her the literature so that she can maybe better understand what both my husband and son are dealing with on an everyday basis. I am also looking for information on the medications so that I can help her to understand that not every medication we may try is going to make him a "zombie".

  1. Oh My son has this also, and well his teacher said that their was nothing wrong with him, well now that he is on medication, he is going to pass the 1st grade, and I am so thankful for that.

Do not listen to others they just don't understand. I do. :)

There is different types of adhd so read up on it, my son has inattention, where is just cannot pay attention at all. he is not really hipper at all. http://www.adhd.com/parents/parents_trea...

  2. Cut out red dyed foods and candy that helps. My son started on Ridalyn it works good now he is on Concerta it works well also. Research it though there are also some herbal things you can do.

  3. I don't have literature but I do know that cutting sugar and a healthy diet is VERY important and make a HUGE difference.

that site has lots of info on ADHD.  And cutting sugar doesnt always help a child with ADHD and neather does eating lots of veggies like the first person said.  they are really misinformed and should get thier facts strait b4 posting on something they dont know about.  hope this helps.

  5. My daughter was diagnosed with ADHD about 3yrs ago.  She was also 5 at the time.  She is very hyper and hard to handle at times, so I understand what you deal with daily.  I have her in counseling now, which has really helped both her and me learn about ADHD and a lot of different ways in handling all sorts of problems.  She recommened a few websites to me and they are all full of good info.  I hope your mother realizes she can't blame anyone, she just needs to help her grandson deal with his mental illness.

One GREAT  book she gave me was :

1-2-3 Magic by Dr. Thomas Phelan.

I have been using this technique on both of my daughters and it really does work!!

The doctor has switched her meds several times, I have also changed doctors b/c I didnt like the way they were switching her meds so much.   At 5yr old she started on Daytrana (its the patch)  It did seem to help her esp in school, but she is a big girl and the patch would never stay on her body, so he switched her to concerta.  This medicine did not agree with my daughter, it has several side effects, upset stomach is mainly what my daughter complained of, so yet again the doc switched her to ritilan, and I have not noticed much a difference,  now I have the conuselor working with the doctor to determine which med would suit her best.  She is on no medicine right now, all those meds scare me and I hate having to make her take anything, but she cant concentrate long enough to finish most tasks, so I feel it would help her.   I know every child will react to  each medicine differently, just have a doctor that is well informed about ADHD and has a lot of other children that has adhd also.  Otherwise your liable to have the same problem I did with the doctor giving the wrong amt of meds to my daughter.

Best of Luck to You and your family!!
