Nadal is only 545 points behind Federer in the rankings. That Nadal onslaught could give us an idea as to who is the king of grass? Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal ?

  1. Nadal is the temporary king of grass. He gets to rule for a year until next wimbledon

  2. just because rafa beat federer once in wimbledon does not mean he's already the king of grass, remember, he did not beat federer the way he did on clay, it took 4 and 48 to beat roger, so id say roger is still the king of grass, it's just that at that moment, rafa played better..

  3. now that roger did not make it 6 in a row, its definitely Pete Sampras

  4. Roger Federer is still and will always be King of Grass.

Full credit to Rafa I mean he really had to pull some serious aces from up his sleeve because Federer really gave Rafa absolute h**l today, and really I think you just have to love and respect Federer more for it. Nadal won his first grass court title and now first Wimbledon, but that doesn't make him King of Grass at all. Big congrats to Rafa for sticking it out, but until he wins 5 Wimbledons in a row or more, Federer is still King of Grass.

  5. First of all, I wouldn't exactly consider 6-4 6-4 6-7 6-7 9-7 an "onslaught."

Second of all, one major win against the person who is widely considered the "king of grass" does not automatically make one the new "king of grass."

I think Nadal would have to demonstrate a sustained ability to dominate his opponents on grass, the way Federer has been doing for the past 5 or so years.

So, while Federer's hold on the title may be slipping, the title does not belong to Nadal until he can demonstrate dominance on grass.

(I would be saying the same if tFed had won the French and you were asking about the "King of Clay.")

  6. Roger and Rafa are the prince charmings of grass.  Their combined total has not reached Sampras records yet... Sampras is still the King... though old and retired...

  7. It's an interesting question. I loved the match, but I kept wondering why Fed wasn't working his way to the net more often. Of course Rafa's shots kept him deep, but even so. I think one key to winning consistently on grass is coming in all the time to volley, challenging the other guy to pass. McEnroe, Edberg, Becker, Sampras, even Rafter, all of them did that. I think they would have done that yesterday. I think Fed might have won had he tried harder to get to the net oftener. And that's why I think one of those other great serve-and-volleyers is the King of Grass, because they understood that.

Of course, the counter to that is 5-in-a-row Borg, the consummate baseliner. The counter to *that* is that Borg played in a window when there were no great serve-and-volleyers to challenge him -- i.e. between Laver/Newcombe and McEnroe. When McEnroe emerged, Borg probably knew his time was up.

Long answer, but your question made me think about tennis, which is among my favourite things to do!

  8. federer

  9. absoloutely,Roger Federer.he is still the best and remains the best 4ever.his loss to nadal was just because he was unlucky.but no matter he is still the King of Grass and he is the best tennis player in history.
