Just found a GIC certificate for $30,000 in an old box of photos...

Does just having the certificate mean that the investment is just lying in an account somewhere or could this have been cashed in years ago? It was issued in 1990 by Scotiabank. I plan to inform the family member and I don't want to get all excited about it and then look like an idiot!

  1. Well you can definitely try to look up the CUSIP number if there is one on the certificate. The other option is you can send an email to customer service at Scotiabank - if possible send it to a branch that you would be able to call and talk come Monday.

  2. Wait until Monday morning and call Scotiabank.  They can research the certificate for you.
