Just found out I may need a root canal...?

I went to the dentist yeserday with tooth pain, and she told me the cavity was very deep that I may need a root canal. She filled it with a temporary filling, but today when I drink it still hurts, so I guess that means I need one? I'm very scared.. I've heard a lot of mixed things about root canals.. from it's the most painful procedure ever to it doesnt hurt at all. Novicane shots don't bother me, and some people say thats all the pain you feel because your mouth is so numb.

Can someone please tell me all the details from their experience so I know what to expect?

Also, I need my wisdom teeth out too. Which is worse? Can I get them both done at once, or no?

THANKS

  1. Usually, people who have problems with root canals have the problem because they wait way too long and the tooth gets infected, and then it is hard to get numb. Generally, if you take care of the problem sooner than later, you shouldn't have a problem.

  2. I am having a root canal tomorrow morning and it's my first.  Everyone I talked to said they do not hurt b/c you are so numbed up.  And afterwards they have told me there is mild pain, but nothing Tylenol won't help.  The good thing is that the tooth pain will be gone immediately, which I am happy about b/c my tooth is killing me.

I had all four wisdom teeth out.  They were impacted so they put me to sleep.  It did hurt a lot afterwards, but they gave me strong pain meds to help.

I have the feeling the wisdom teeth is far worse than the root canal.  Good luck!

  3. The pullings will be a lot worse because you'll have to walk around with a mouth full of gauze for awhile. I had mine pulled one at a time so it wasn't so bad for me. It only bled for a few hours each time but i was fine by the next day. I hardly felt the top wisdom teeth getting pulled, but the bottom ones felt a lot worse. As for the root canal... i've never had one done on a molar but i needed one on one of my front teeth because of nerve trauma. It didn't hurt. I felt a lot of vibrations but it wasn't bad.

  4. WOW!  Root canals are painful, but it depends on how well you accept pain.  What may hurt to me,  may not hurt to you.  Now the wisdom teeth...thats a killer!  I had all of mine removed at the same time!  I couldnt go to work for 3 days bc i was 16 and working @ a Restaurant and blood was forming so fast and consistently in my mouth that I had to spit every 3-4 minutes. I wouldnt have it all done at the same time unless youre a real tough scout.
