This must be why I could never study for tests and absorb things in class. I also recently found out that I have ADHD which also distracts me from paying attention. I am in college right now, what are some techniques that people with learning disabilities use?

  1. i feel like add and adhd are just a medical way to say, you are not good at paying attention, which in this day and age who can blame u...u should focus on whats important. and not worry so much about your "disease".

  2. I  and my son have ADHD and I do not now and never will consider it a disability. Use your hyperfocus ability by finding subjects that interest you and study them in the way you find most effective. I need a quiet room to read, my son does better with music playing, find your best way.

A good book to read that may help you is ADHD A DIFFERENT WAY OF THINKING by Lynn Weiss PhD. She is a therapist with ADHD and her book helped me embrace ADHD and use it to my advantage. I hope it will do the same for you.

The book may be available at your library.

  3. If you have written documentaion from your docs and/or psychologists, you need to take that to your college's disability services office.  They will assist you in getting accommodations that will help you based on what you need.  Extra time on tests and taking your tests in a separate, quiet room are the most common accommodations for someone in your situation.  These "helps" will not be on your transcript in any way.
