my son's 16 months old. about a month ago i gave him some of my pb&j sandwich (about the size of a dime) and a minute later he broke out in red blotches (not hives) all over his face and neck. we took him to get a blood test bc i wanted to know the severity of his allergy to peanuts and got the results from the doc just now. she said they tested for 14 things and he was allergic to all 14!!??!? omg, that freaked me out!

the top three were: peanuts, shrimp and walnuts. but she also named many others that he's been eating for a while now including: cows milk!, egg whites, wheat and corn. the others she listed that we haven't given him are cat fish, sesame seeds and scallops.

anyone else have a kid in this predicament? some say that a kid can grow out of their allergies. if i've been giving him milk, eggs and wheat for at least 6 months so far with no real symptoms, he should be okay, right? the doc on the phone said to just continue with whatever i've been feeding him and we'll go and see a specialist next week.

i feel like he has to live in a bubble when it comes to food now =(

  1. He won't have to live in a bubble but you will need to be careful what you give him. Some kids do outgrow allergies while others don't. My grandson loves strawberries but was allergic to them. When he was 7 years old he came to my house one weekend and ate about a pint of strawberries while my back was turned as I was fixing supper. There was no reaction at all. My daughter took him to be tested again and they said he had grown out of it.

Your specialist can answer your questions better than anyone else. Write down your concerns so you don't forget anything and ask about them. Be sure to ask about food substitutions for the things he can't have. They will probably give you a list.

In the mean time, don't give your son anything that you think will be bad for him.

  2. Maybe you should follow the doctors advice for now.

Then visit your nearests health food store and purchase your child some good multivitamins. Try feeding him a little bit of chocolate/vanilla soy, rice or almond milk in case you have to find an alternative and he misses milk. You can feed him different variations of rice with vegetables/ cheese substitute from a health food store or a big chain grocery store.

They have so many alternatives at a health food store or in the health section of the grocery store. Try publix, they have a special line of healthy foods. You can buy chips made from veggies, almond butter, foods made for vegans even cookies without eggs milk etc.

    I hope this helps : )

But listen to your doc. no matter what if you have a good one cause he knows what's best : )

  3. for the wheat allergy you can buy rice breads in the freezer section of your grocery store or health food store and rice noodles that taste like regular noodles (not Chinese rice noodles).  instead of cows milk he can have soy milk or rice milk.  be sure that your son is getting enough protein and fats from other sources since it wont be from milk.  for baking you can use an egg replacer.  on the internet there are lots of good wheat free flour blends so you can make cakes on his birthday and cookies too!  there is also dairy free margarine too in the health food store.

my son has allergies too...many...but he is growing out of them.  please don't feed your child anything that he is allergic to, it can be dangerous.  there are many alternative foods.  talk to a nutritionist if you find yourself at a loss or overwhelmed.

i too felt that my son was living in a bubble, it's scary.  if my son ate just an 8th of a teaspoon of a food he was allergic to he would have to get a shot of epinephrin and go to the hospital in an ambulance.

i don't live in fear of it, but i find that i have to remind other parents of the severity and watch my child like a hawk.  i don't let it stress me any more, but i have cried about it many times.

after a while it won't seem hard or weird.

    good luck.

DO NOT EVER GIVE YOUR CHILD FOOD THAT THEY ARE ALLERGIC TOO.  ONE REACTION MAY BE MILD AND THE NEXT HE COULD HAVE SEVERE BREATHING PROBLEMS AND HIS BLOOD PRESSURE MAY FALL FAST RESULTING IN DEATH IF NOT TREATED IMMEDIATELY.

  4. Wow!  I'm guessing since you got the results over the phone your son had the RAST test and not a skin-prick test?  That test can tell you that he MIGHT be allergic to something.  The higher the number, the more likely it is for him to be allergic.  That's why the skin-prick test is preferable.  It's more accurate.

If he's never had an adverse reaction to the other foods, I wouldn't worry too much.  Maybe take them out of his diet for a couple weeks then add them back in one at a time just to see if anything happens, though.  Maybe he's having a reaction that you didn't realize WAS a reaction.  But I wouldn't worry a lot.

My oldest was allergic to milk and outgrew that allergy just before she turned one.  My third baby was allergic to bananas, pears, and oats and outgrew those allergies just after his first birthday.  Peanut allergies can be tricky, though, and are more likely to last a lifetime, but it's not definite so don't give up hope!
