Just got a sun conure!!!?

Question

i just got my sun conure yesturday!! i named him paco=] hes less then a year old and everytime i go near the cage he makes a relle loud noises and i talked 2 him in baby nice soft tone. and he kinda calms down i just wanna no how i can show him that he can trust me?? and my dad and my sister think its okay to pick him up now. so will he hate me if he hates them??????

Hi. That is wonderful news! I have a half moon conure and let me tell you what a joy it is!! Just talk to your bird a lot and play with it. Your bird will learn to trust you. I've found that, my bird, Siren is very protective over me.

Just  had to say congradulations!  My young son really wants one of these birds.  spend allot of time with the bird, they are flock animals and the more time you are with it the better chance it will see you as it's flock.

I've had my sun conure "Sammie" for 3 years now...At first if you haven't handled him much yet, try offering him treats, sunflower seed, or fruit in your hand and see if he'll take it... try and build his trust, then try the "up" command...do you know how to do this?  talk to him in quiet tones...good luck w/ paco...have fun...

Training your bird at a young age is ideal when compared to re-training or correcting the bad habits of an older bird. Some pet owners can become sidetracked by the freshness of having a new bird and enjoying their cuteness while they’re still baby birds; however, you must remember that in order to set the stage for the future, it is important to socialize your bird, work on good communication, and establish trust at a young age.  Just as human babies need to learn to eat with a spoon and play well with others before they tackle long division, baby birds need to start with the basics. Spend time with your young bird developing trust and teaching the basics of good bird behavior.

Keep talking to him in a low voice and try and pick him up by putting your finger in front of his chest, it might help to have your other hand behind him so that he thinks he can´t just run away. If not then just try getting closer to him every time and when he's being good and doesn't bite you give him a seed and tell him he's a good boy. I've got a nanday conure and you've just gotta understand each other. Make sure you're not scared when you try and pick him up and don't make quick movements because that will make him even more nervous.

Just be patient and if he gets very nervous just leave him for another day. It's normally best for them to get used to their new home for 2 days and make sure he's eating and drinking properly.
