I got an MIP like an hour ago at Central Michigan University....awesome. I have never had to go to court or anything like this, so I was wondering if anyone can give me some insight on what to expect..? I know there is a fine and everything, but what happens in court?

Any suggestions would be VERY helpful.

  1. Suspended from CMU for one semester, and possibly, a week in jail most likely.  Then some fines of course...

You'll go in front of the judge, and just tell them what you plead

  2. A week in jail?!?!? That's nonsense. I got an MIP last summer in Colorado ( I was 16 though ) and I only had to go to a month long alcohol class (every monday) and pay a fine. Never even had to go to court, the class canceled it out.

  3. I'm guessing it was alcohol since you're at a university. You're probably going to go in. Because it was a first offense, you're looking at probably 30 hours of community service. That's about it. As far as the approach goes, honesty truly is the best policy, especially since a sworn (sober) officer caught you either transporting or under the influence of alcohol. Again... This is a community service thing since it was the first offense.

  4. You will talk to your P.D. and talk to the judge. Be VERY courteous, address the judge always with "Yes/No Sir/Ma'am your honor". Additionally, make sure to always make eye contact with the judge when speaking, listen and speak clearly, and DO NOT under ANY circumstances get out of control. It will only make the judge see you as unruly, and uphold the ticket.

  5. Well I once had to go to a pre-hearing for a court case (i was being sued by the county for domestic assault) but the judge dropped the case in the prelimiliary hearing but ANYWAYS!!!

Just keep it calm and don't try anything stupid. That's really the main thing. Don't be an idiot, and maintain calmness.
