Question:

Just got contacts - one eye isn't seeing as clearly as the other? Question about "dominant eye"?

I've been wearing glasses for about two years, and I recently decided I wanted to give contacts a try, so on Monday, I had an eye exam and got some contacts. Later that day, I noticed that the vision in my left eye was crisp and crystal clear, but the vision in the other one, while better than it would have been if I weren't wearing the lens, was just not as clear as the other one.

Today, I went back to the place I got them (Visionworks) and explained the problem. They had me try a few different contacts at different prescriptions, but we couldn't really find one that made my right eye see as clear as my left eye.

They told me that this was normal. That everyone has one "dominant eye" and that no matter what, no matter the prescription, my right eye would NEVER be as clear as my left. I though this was odd, since my left eye is actually the worse one (without any correction).

  1. i have astigmatism in my left eye and while most contact brands i've tried on my right eye help me see crystal clear, my left eye is always a little fuzzy.

And i know it wasn't until i went to a new eye doctor that they discovered my astigmatism (my last one was like.. i don't have time for you so come in let me just quickly check your eyes and leave) so perhaps this is the case?

  2. Yea, thats ridiculous. While im sure there is some truth to the theory to the whole " dominant eye " thing. It is their job to find you contacts that will make you see as clearly as possible. There is no excuse otherwise. I suggest you try to get your money back and see a better optometrist. Good luck!

  3. I think the explanation they gave you is a bad one, but I may know what is happening here.  It sounds like you are correcting your left eye with a toric lens and your right eye with a spherical lens.  This means that the astigmatism in your left eye is at least -.75 diopters.

If you have astigmatism in your right eye as well that is less than -.75 diopters it is not high enough to use a toric lens.  You would have to use a spherical lens and it would not be as clear as your left eye.

I hope this makes sense to you.

  4. Yes I have the same problem. My right eye sees far worse than my left eye.  As far I was told I could go in and get my right contact prescription  stronger at any time. I don't think what your optometrist said about that being normal is correct
