  1. the Damsire is the Sire of the Mother

  2. Hi,

The Grandsire is the Fathers Father.

The Damsire is the Mothers Father

Horse breeding is very sexist. The male line is considered to be much more important. Actually it is mostly because the male horses can have many more offspring than the females, and people become more familiar with their offspring.

  3. sire is the dad

    grandsire is the dad's dad

    dam is the mother

    damsire is the mother's dad

and all that, they still cant run for the baby!!!!

  4. Sire is father

    Dam is mother

Grandsire and Damsire are the grandfathers on each side.  The grandsire is the grandfather on the father's side while the damsire is the grandfather on the mother's side...  dam=mother and sire=father, so damsire=mother's-father.

Horse racing handicappers and breeders and the like are much more concerned with the male lineage...  most people don't know a lot of mares names and are unfamiliar with their racing careers.  Therefore, we talk about who the mother was sired by because we know the sires names...

for example, for Rags to Riches' pedigree, we'd say that she was by AP Indy (meaning that was her sire) and she was out of Better Than Honour (meaning that's her dam), or we'd say she was out of a Deputy Minister mare...  meaning that Rags's dam was sired by Deputy Minister (Rags's damsire).

Incidentally, Rags to Riches's sire was AP Indy...  AP Indy has really excellent breeding which he passed to Rags.  AP Indy was sired by the great Seattle Slew and was out of a Secretariat mare!  That means that one horse in every generation of her sire's side has won the Belmont...  Rags to Riches makes 4 consecutive generations of Belmont winners for that bloodline...  pretty impressive!
