Question:

Just had an EMG-- why not affected muscles tested?

I've been having progressive proximal muscle weakness (hips and pelvic girdle) over the past year and my PCP ordered an EMG. The neurologist inserted his needle into the muscles from my knees down (calves) only. Then he proclaimed the test normal. Is this the correct method to determine if my upper thigh muscles are affected? Shouldn't the muscles that are weak be tested too?

  1. Sounds more like they are checking the progression of your condition. It is less important to test muscles that you know are affected than to find out if a Muscle is affected and to what extent.
