Question:

Just how dangerous is Edmonton?

Quite a few people say Edmonton is a dangerous city with a lot of seedy parts and a fair amount of gang activity. To get things into perspective, how safe is Edmonton downtown to walk around during the day and how safe is it to use public transport in order to get to other destinations around Edmonton.

Are you safer walking around Edmonton in comparison to Manhattan or Central London?

  1. Edmonton has a lower crime rate than either of lose cities, I believe. However, like any larger city, there are definitely some rather seedy parts of town. Stay away from parts of Whyte Avenue after dark, as well as areas like Old Town Beverley or around the Commonwealth stadium, as these places can be a little iffy when there are less people around. However, downtown Edmonton during the day is fairly safe, as there are lots of people around, and, for the most part, public transport is safe and pretty clean.

Just use common sense, as you would in any city, and enjoy!

  2. I don't know if it still is, but Edmonton was the murder capital of Canada. Keeping that in mind, with Edmonton's population taken into account, London and Manhattan have far higher crime rates because they have far more people.

  3. In 2007 there were about 65 murders in Manhattan and 160 in London.

The murder rate in Edmonton in 2005 was 44.

Using the above info, ranking them would be from safest would be:

    Edmonton

    Manhattan

    London

  4. Edmonton is a great city to .  They  have a low crime rate, very little pollution and an excellent police force that work to keep the city safe.  There are many neighbourhoods you can afford to live and visit

.Edmonton hosts a safe, efficient and inexpensive public transportation system, the Edmonton Transit System . With hundreds of different bus routes, you can get nearly anywhere you need to go usually with minimal bus transfers, provided that you are traveling into or out of downtown during the morning or evening rush hour. If you're travelling at other times of day, bus service becomes much less efficient, requiring more transfers and longer commutes. Bus routes are numbered, along with the destination name (often a major bus transfer center or suburb name) but overall its very safe.

I would say its safer than London or Manhattan

    Have a wonderful stay!!!!!!!!!

  5. Per capita, Edmonton is one of the most unsafe places in Canada to live, which actually isnt saying that much because Canada is generally safe. Anyone who says Edmonton isnt is a rich person who lives in a nice area and never looks at statistics. Manhattan is very safe but im not so sure about central London.

  6. Edmonton is a fairly dangerous city. You can take the LRT (light rail transit) during the day, but I would recommend doing so after dark. There are gangs that hang about, and there have been instances of teenagers bullying others on the train. Buses are okay in some places, but downtown, it can be dangerous.

I lived in Edmonton, and coming home one night, I had a bottle thrown at me, from a passing car. I also saw fights erupt in the middle of the day, on Jasper Ave.

I lived in Edmonton for a year, and I love the city, but I think it it can be quite dangerous, to be honest. It is okay during the day, but at night, you have to be careful, if you are downtown, or certain bad areas.
