How high will it get before and IF t ever levels off? Then what? Will the US find an alternative fuel? Or will we put up with the increasing prices for ever and ever?

  1. There is a site that discusses this specific issue.  According to http://www.peakoil.com the oil is running out and the prices will continue to rise alot, come down a little, then rise alot again.  This cycle is to repeat itself until alternate fuel is viable or we enter into world war III for world dominations of all the oil fields.  They also cover the rise in food prices and food shortages (loss of agriculture due to overpopulation) and a host of other topics regarding survival in this depression era.

Summary from other sites:  Current expectations are $20.00 per gallon in about 5-8 years with government control (rations) with hybrid vehicles mandatory.  Gas guzzlers will eventually be outlawed.

  2. There are alternatives.  Please do yourself a favor and check out these sources.  I know  the list is daunting, but it is well worth the time.  Take care of yourself and others.

  3. Keep going up like always...Hopefully it won't get as bad as in Europe.

  4. Very simple light crude is a finite resource - we use it about 50,000 times faster than nature can produce it. The price will only go up for the foreseeable future.

However, on the bright side we can still make petroleum from heavier oils and even shale - but this cost a lot more to make. I predict really expensive fossil fuels for the near future.

Big west coast cities will suffer as medium distance commuting by car becomes too expensive for most people, so more city living and no new sprawling suburbs.

Electricity production will increasingly switch to nuclear and natural sources with nasty coal burning stations picking up the slack.

We may see less imported fresh food as airline cargo becomes prohibitively expensive - less air travel too.
