Question:

Just received letter from a college I attended saying I owe them money. Do I have to pay?

First off, the dates I attended the college were over six years ago and, honestly, I dont remember having owed them money when I stopped attending. I wasnt on financial aid or anything, all out of pocket and it was a "technical" college I went to for some computer courses at night. The letter is legit and I have gone on their website and seen the balance, but I have no way of proving anything about this either way. And it just seems strange after 6 years....

I know that the statute of limitations on debts is different for some things, but I am not sure about apparent "owed" money from a college. Not student loans.

Thanks for any help

  1. You should request verification of the debt from the college.  If the letter is from any entity besides the college itself (i.e. a debt collector or agency that is not the entity to which the money is owed), then the provisions of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act apply, and you should review that on the web to see what your rights are.

If the debt is indeed NOT a student loan, then it may very well be barred by an applicable statute of limitation, and be legally uncollectable (i.e. by law you might not have to pay it back).  Most statutes of limitation are less than six years.

  2. I think u should request what the charges are from and if valid, definitely pay them.  Colleges don't like to verify/send/release transcripts when u owe money, even if its like five dollars.  If you still live near the technical college than going by the Bursars/Cashiers office is a better option.
