Question:

Just saw Bushy at a press conference. Why did not one ask him about putting on a national speed limit of 60mph

It has been proven that a speed limit of 55 or 60 would save millions of gallons of gasoline and force prices to come down. Why oh why is nothing being done about this? Dumb do-dos will continue high speed driving on our interstates until a speed limit is imposed.

  1. Because that is a ridiculous and extremely costly and difficult solution to implement for such a temporary problem.

  2. Because a national speed limit is an idea that has already been tried - and failed.

Why do you expect that trying the same thing again will get different results?

  3. Because in my area most speed limits are between 55 and 65 already so it will not help in Ohio and Pennsylvania much at all.  It is only in the West where the speed limit is really high because they have large stretches of land to cross to get from one place to another and they will go fast no matter what.

  4. He has bigger problems then changing a minor speed limit down 5 mph...

  5. It was tried, didn't work and was unConstitutional.

  6. We use to have a 55mph speed limit in the past. It was proven that no one followed it.

  7. Some of us in this country still value our freedoms and would rather not see more freedoms being taken away from us.

Besides, driving slow would only offer a minimal amount of savings compared to cutting back on driving habits and only driving when you really need to.

  8. Then why not say 50mph?  40mph?  30mph maxes nationwide by that rationale?  People have places to go and don't want to go that slow.. they're willing to pay the extra $2 that it costs them to go faster.  You will save more gas if you don't go on vacation... but that doesn't sound like fun.

And besides, at $180+ that it costs to put a sign up, think about how much we'd actually be losing just to convert all the them...

  9. Jesus....if you want to drive slower to conserve gas, then go ahead.  But it is NOT the government's place to force people to conserve.  If people feel that their fuel costs are too high, they'll conserve on their own, much more efficiently than the government could ever dictate.

  10. Um... it is not realistic at all, people will drive no slower or faster than they do now. Due to the fuel prices the police have cut back on their patrols and would not be capable of fully enforcing a new speed limit.

  11. I agree.  I even asked our governor about this.  He just said that the people didn't want a lower speed limit.  We raised the speed limit to 70 on the interstates right when this oil crisis began.  I remember when the speed limit was dropped to 55.  It was difficult to follow the law for a while, but it definitely saves fuel.  I believe they estimated a 40% savings nationwide.

The speed and the way people drive has a lot to do with their MPG.  Try driving no faster than 55 and using a soft touch when you start up from a stop.  Turn off  your car when stopped for a train, etc.  It really does make a noticeable difference.

  12. Well, maybe not EVERYTHING IN THE WORLD can be directly controlled by Darth Bush.

Come on, Man. It's not his job. And maybe you are the only one that doesn't know that.

Factually, I don't want all these Washington DC pinheads making all these laws for the States.

It takes away the individuality of the State. Stop expecting the president - or even the Government in general - to be the solution to EVERY SINGLE problem that we have!

Just get Washington D.C. to leave us alone and govern ourselves. We can do it better than they can.

  13. That would require that we have a truly free press where the reporters are not worried about loosing the sponsorship of Automakers and oil companies.

  14. For truckers, their vehicles are designed to be more efficient at a higher speed. For regular vehicles it varies as to what is most efficient. Unless you have the pedal to the metal and are constantly stop and starting a higher speed should be just as efficient.

  15. Interesting...my car actually gets 23 MPG at 70 mph and only 18 at 55mph!
