well it's two questions, one about horses and one about vets.there is no wrong answer, it's more of like a poll for my newest essay due for english class. . . (yeah i been thru so many college english classes that i've just started writting the papers a head of time)

1. when you were growing up, what was your "dream horse"?(mine was a friesian horse, guess it still is but i doubt i'll ever get to own one of mah own)

2. why does anyone need a vet anymore??? with the amount of questions that need vet to look at the horse here, maybe we dont need vets, just web cams and we can self examine each other's horses.

To everyone who thinks we still need vets here's a question for ya: why answer all those questions that are for a vets?

  1. My dream horse was a Arabian when I was little now I honestly disslike them. Im more of a Quarter horse person. My perfect hers would be a Quarter Horse Paint now.

  2. MIne was a fresian as well, but I have settled for a black modern shetland that I do driven dressage with.   much cheaper to buy and to feed, same look and action, the only animal I know of that can turn a cart on one wheel and go the other way without losing any impulsion!

we need vets because sometimes it does take someone with four years + of education to determine a problem.  most of the time when I answer a health question I start out by saying that they really should consult a vet, and not just go off of what people say online.

I am extremely dyslexic, and I have a tendency to spell check everything before I post.  most places have a spell checker that you can pull up.

  3. We need vets, becuase it is easier to diagnose a problem when you actually see it person, and what if your horse needs surgery or a treatment that only a licensed vet is qualified to do? And, we wouldn't be able to get prescription medication. With all the sickos in the world these days, you can't trust anyone with a powerful drug in their hands.

  4. I had two, actually.  One was a big black gelding, which I now have (and have taught to give kisses).  The other was a big bay mare with a black mane and tail.  I have just rescued her.

Life is good in the horse world right now.

  5. I wanted a skewbald cob ( one of the earlier horses I rode - gypsy vanner type with loads of feather, he was cool and his name was Zimba).

As for the vets - well I do have a webcam but getting Harvey to stand in front of the desk would be a bit tricky. Actually the vet is closer to my stable yard than my house is so I'd have to travel him to get him here too.

Nowt drastically wrong with your spelling etc so don't worry about it.

Edit> I'll only answer first aid type stuff, which is mostly common sense anyway,

John r -  I think you can buy one on Ebay......

  6. well for an answer to question number 1

a horse that would mind me and clean out its own stall

2.because they wont let my write my own scrips for prescription medication and they have x-ray equipment.

couldnt care less about your spelling(at least it is understandable)

  7. i never had a "dream" horse i just wanted a horse...didnt really care about much else haha

i still think we need vets...wen ppl ask vet questions they are always straight from my book called:the comprehensive guide to equine veterinary medicne and if its something i think needs vet attention then i will just say call ur vet...lol =]]

  8. 1. an appaloosa.

    2. TRUE, but i wanna be a vet, sorry (:

  9. 1.  A little white small welsh pony :)

    2. WE MUST DEFINITELYY NEED VETS!  We cannot afford to not have vets.  My pony started being sick with colic on 1/1/2008.  If the vet had not been able to come out, he would've died.  It turned out that his intestines had twisted half way and he had to get surgery.

  10. 1.  an Andalusian

    2.  We need vets because they have the keys to the pharmacy.  And anesthesia...and they have WAY more experience than we have.  And what sends us into a 'panic'...*running for the phone to call the vet to get here NOW NOW NOW!!*...they have actually dealt with many a time in most circumstances.

That said...some people go overboard and call the vet for asinine things.  And imagined 'traumas'.  A bite from another horse, my horse tripped, or a minor scratch or my horse is laying down to sleep.  This is where experience from years and being willing to LEARN from mentors, vets, and others that have dealt with problems, come in real handy.  My vet likes that I can do alot of home vetting.

I wouldn't presume to tell someone what THEY should do.  I will tell them what I do...and try to remember to tell them that I am not a vet.

I REALLY have a problem when someone tells another how to 'medicate' their horse.  I think that is a no-no.  I almost choked when I heard someone tell another to give their horse Nyquil for a cold!  You call the vet for dosages of EQUINE medicine.  I've been giving my own antibiotics, vaccines, oxytocin, or whatever for years...I STILL call the vet every single time to get their advice.  Even if it is the same stuff again and again.  It might have changed...so I check.
