Hi,

I am 15 years old and for the past week I have started to go biking for about 30 min a night, at a cranberry bog. I wanted to know what are the benefits my body is getting by doing this daily.

How many miles should I do a day?

I have a few spinal problems. Do you think by biking I am helping my back?

Thanks for answering!=)

  1. Congratulations and welcome to the fun world of cycling!  The benefits to your body are many, better cardiovascular fitness, muscle tone, lower blood pressure, improved circulation etc. Plus, cycling burns calories. You can lose fat and gain muscle.  How many miles you should ride a day depends on how much time you have and your fitness level. You didn't mention if you're riding on the road or on trails. On the road 5-10 miles is a good distance for starters, on the trail maybe 5 miles or less.  Do as much as you can do without feeling totally spent at the end! Remember to eat and drink!

  2. Do a total body workout including lunges, squats, core work, and handheld weights and your back wont hurt. Try biking for an hour try to get high speeds and climb as many hills as possible.

  3. First of all go ask your Doctor if he agrees that cycling will be good for your spinal problems.

    Second: make sure you have the proper posture and set up to ride the bike, what we generally term as getting "fitted" for the bike. Your local bike shop can help you with this. The more comfortable you are when riding the bike the more miles you'll enjoy the ride.

    Third: keep gradually building up the ride time, the miles will take care of themselves.

    Last of all: Keep up the good work, I hope you back problems sort themselves out, again check with your Doctor that you are doing the right thing.

    Good Luck

  4. well i do BMX and im 14 and i uslaly bike like 3 hours everyday... it gets you in really good shape and your calfs get huge

  5. You pretty much are in better shape all around. You have more strength, your more fit, you have more stamina.

    I would say start with like 10 miles on a flat road, and work your way up.

    I actually got back problems from biking, so i don't think it will help that much. You are in one position too long, and the muscles and bones can't breathe and move.
