Question:

Just started jogging. Tips, please?

I'm aiming for two days on, one day off of jogging at this point and I'm at approx 1.2 miles in 15 min and my butt is whipped at the end. I'm in fairly good shape (need toning) and at the upper average end of the scale weight-wise. My questions are:

About how long (month or week-wise) does it take to become "addicted" to running?

How many miles should I work up to to get in optimal shape?

Any other tips for beginngers? Thanks!

  1. evime ery day try to run a little more than what you did yesterday. make sure you are very hydrated cause you dont want to fall out.dont try to kill yourself dont time because it will make you think and thats not something yoou need to do while running. have a clear and open mind

  2. Honestly, mileage doesn't make you addicted.  I run a tremendous amount of distance when I train for marathons, but I don't care too much for running.  It's not bad, but I'm not addicted, nor will I ever be.

Try aiming at 2 mile runs.  If you jog the whole way, good.  If you have to walk a little, that's fine, too.  BUT, the only way you start really increasing distance and increasing your health and abilities is by pushing yourself as hard and as far as possible.  It doesn't mean SPRINT two miles, but it means to keep going even if you start to hurt.  Get used to the pain.  I get a slight uncomfortable cramp in my right foot after running 8-9 miles.  So, every now and then, when we do long distances, I feel it.  I think, "Hello, old friend!"

Just keep at it.  Once you start getting comfortable running 3-4 miles, it starts getting more fun.

  3. I bacame "addicted" after about 4 weeks, but I was really addicted after runninng a race about 6 weeks after I'd started running. That's when it really went click.

Some tips: don't run too fast, every day or too long in the beginning, let your body (muscles etc.) get used to it first

    good luck and have fun!
