Just starting fishing?

I am kinda of just getting in to fishing, i have before but i relally like it alot now, i usually just lake fish, i was thinking about getting a spinning rod and reel, is this goodfor lake fishing???

It's not hard or expensive to get started with some descent equipment and a little bit of knowledge.

1. Walmart is a good place for the novice fisherman. Even as an expert fisherman I tend to hit wally world instead of bass proshops and cabelas.

2. Shakespear makes a good rod that can handle your needs. DO NOT GET AN UGLY STICK! The Shakespear Excursion runs about $15 Dollara and I actually use some during tournaments.

3. Your reel doesn't need to be a high dollar one. Shimano and Shakespear make good affordable reels just make sure that they turn smoothly and have little return (this is when you turn the reel in reverse) it should stop right away and not turn in reverse. This helps with setting the hook on your fish. these reels will run $20-30.

4. Tackle depends on what you will fish for. If you are using live bait then use normal hooks, Splitshot sinkers (ease in adding/removing)  For north american lake fish I would usually buy classic hooks in sizes 2-6.  Hook a minnow below the jaw and run it up through in between its nose slits. use a bobber at about  2-3 feet from the hook and fish near trees in the water.

5. Using fake lures gets a bit complicated. A good source for tying baits, and using lures is www.bassmaster.com

i fish alot.  i use a spinning reel and rod.  it is probably the MOST popular reel/rod combo to use.  if you are just starting, i would suggest going to Canadian Tire.  most Canadian Tire stores have a fishing section.  they have many rods on display.  i would suggest a 20 - 30 dollar rod/reel combo. you can even check the weekly flyer for deals/sales.   you dont need anything fancy.  also buy some 8lb fishing line.

If you are talking about an open face spinning rod, it'll be one of the best investments you will ever make because it's very versatile. If you get a medium/light to medium action setup it will handle most fishing situations you will encounter. When you buy the rod, see if it comes with an extra spool or if you can buy one. This way you can quickly change to a lighter line if the situation calls for it. However, check with the tackle shop manager about the right setup for your area before you purchase anything. Yes I would definately recommend a spinning rod and reel.  Casting reels will give even experienced anglers trouble.

If your just getting into fishing, a spinning rod and reel setup will do just fine.

When you get the chance, try to fish with a canepole a few times.

I love fishing with handlines and canepoles.
