  1. well, i would practice getting the ball over the net and serving. also strecth and do jumping jacks. and last, i would be active.

  2. you should try doing curls with weights...not heavy ones or anything...(maybe like 5 pounds)...this will help you strengthen your arms without making them look really muscular and it will help put power into your serves and spikes...hope this helps :)

  3. If you're just starting out, it is wise to get with a friend that has a skill level  comparable to your own or better. If that's not possible, I find that passing the ball against an outside wall will help you work on form and control (remember to squat just as if you were sitting in a chair, get low, arms out front, on your toes, and don't swing). If you can get a group of friends together, shuttle passing is a great exercise (you can do this at a local sand court; if you can pass in sand you can pass anywhere). Also setting against the wall will help you, but I would only suggest it if you already know the correct form of setting so you don't develop any bad habits. As for serving, going to a sand court in your local park would be your best bet because you will need boundaries and a net. I would also use the sand court to practice spiking. At the varsity level, you should be able to toss the ball at about the 10FT line and spike it yourself. This will also help with jump serving.

As for working out, I would do lunges, squats, tuck jumps, bicep and tricep curls, crunches, push ups, and shuttle runs in the sand are best. You have to push yourself harder to compensate for the loose sand. You also have to be more careful though. Never do anything without someone there to watch or help you. In addition, you can add any exercises that focus on your abdominal muscles and legs. This will help you with any vertical challenges you might have, if any. In volleyball, they may say that height is everything, but I have seen players that are 5'2" and can jump higher than a middle blocker at 6' 2".

I always recommend that you try to enroll in local camps and clinics first though. There's nothing better than actual instruction to make sure you do not develop any bad habits.

Good luck on the upcoming season!

  4. Well I have been playing volleyball for my whole life and my family is all into volleyball. (My uncle is the varsity volleyball coach.) You need to get out and run and get into shape. Also, JUMP ROPE! I can not stress this enough! If you jump rope for 1o minutes every day you will feel such a difference when you jump. It will be hard to stick to but if you do, trust me you will be soooo happy you did. Also, do leg lifts. This will make your abs so much stronger which will then let you hit so much stronger. Work on your approach. It's big steps. Left, Right, then quick left right. it depends what position you are(setter, hitter, defensive specialist)Work on it all around. If you aren't very tall you may not be able to be a hitter. But you can be any height to be a defensive specialist(libero). They only play for back row. Have some one toss you a ball and STAY LOW and bump it back to them. Also, have them throw it side-to-side. Work on always beating the ball to the postition. Always face your target. Have someone hit it at you and bump it. Also, have them hit it to you when its high enough that you have to set pass it. You do not set it but put your hands tongether one over the other where the middle is a little spade and just push it up. Keep your hands firm. When you go to tryouts and if you make it ask your coach what exercises HE wants you to do. Also, if you are loud the coach will notice! Don't EVER be shy and don't talk on the court.Coaches hate that! Be loud and say in/out, yours/mine,etc. If you are loud trust me the coach will notice. Also, cheer on the others. Coaches can't get enough of this. Every team needs some one to help lift them up! Good luck! Always believe in your self!

  5. To work on getting in volleyball conditioning shape:

-work on quick sprints...and burst of energy

-hold a squat for about 1min...do this multiple times...and maybe do 2min...

    -jump rope

-work on your calf muscles...and jumping

-your legs need to be in EXCELLENT shape...

    To work on skills:

-get with some friends and just play

    -PRACTICE...PRACTICE...PRACTICE!

-you can set to yourself for as long as possible

-you can pass to yourself for as long as possible

-get with a partner and "pepper" (this is pass, set, attack...to each other)

-get down the basic form for passing/setting/rolling/serving (maybe look at some web sites)

-don't give up...you're not going to be great right away...you have to keep working at it and improve...

    GOOD LUCK@

  7. I've been playing sonce i was 8 and now i'm 13 so i think i cna help. First get a volleyball.  practice passing with ur self.(do in the air or against a wall) once u got that down practice setting. (practice against wall or in the air) its really not that hard and you'll get it in no time. also practice serving. since ur 15 ur probably in high school so i would just start serving overhand.  I would try this with a net.( if u have a park near u they might have one there)  also get in shape. thats really important cus u'll be running and/or doing bearcrawls. i would start running. i hope i helped if u need any more advice email me!!!

  8. most important things....passing and serving...in that order...

  9. you might want to do wall sits. It helps out you leg muscles really well. Its when you put your back up against the wall and then bnd ur knees so it looks liek your sitting down. It hurts but it works. Or just pepper with somebody helps your skills.

  10. Take a volleyball and go to a game.. Sometimes getting in a pool helps. Umm...Try servung over handed to!

  11. My best advice for you is to join a club team or go to a camp. This will drastically improve your skills, and your chance of making the team. My club team started in Sept and my school team in November, so I had 2 months on everyone else trying out. That's one way you could get some practice.

Basic skills, pass or set a ball with a partner or against a wall.  Work on getting the control and co-ordination.  A few tips for trying out:

If your hs is fairly large you might have a tougher chance making the team (we had 80 grade 9's try out at our school). So, some things to keep in mind:

    1. They like tall people, are you tall? If not, I'm short too, and they always seem to need a libero (I don't know if you're familiar with it - a defensive backrow specialist, usually where they stick the short ones, because we are lower to the ground and are more co-ordinated)

    2. Overhand serves. This is really impressive for a newbie, if you can work on one, that's like the magic ticket in.

    3. Control, you don't want to be the one always running after balls, they can tell pretty easily then.

    4. Pair up with a good player. Scout one out ahead of time to make yourself look better (a bad partner can make you run after balls, like in #3, even if its not your fault).

    5. Dress right. No flimsy tank tops, and perfect curls, this is cuthroat. Where the spandex shorts ( if you have them), a volleyball t-shirt (from a camp, or league) and tie your hair up, you have to look the part!

Best of luck, with the volleyball!

  12. Watch some collegiate volleyball on TV. Get a Volleyball for Dummies book from the book store - you know the kind? Yellow and black book? Oh! And read it.  :)

You can do a lot of ball handling exercises by yourself - without needing a partner. Lay on your back, and practice the two hand setting to yourself. Bump the ball straight in the air to yourself - count how many in a row you can do. (it does NOT have to be high)

Serve to your garage door. Throw the ball in the air and set it or bump it to yourself or to the garage door. (be careful it doesn't go on the roof!)  LOL

For conditioning, volleyball requires a LOT of knee bending - so do lots of squats, jumps. Run hills - short distances, quick release from stopping position. Fires up the muscles that way. Learn to take 3 quick steps, and jump STRAIGHT up into the air with a pike - that will be used when you block or hit the ball on the net.

Good luck! Find a summer camp or college program for your age and sign up. you will love it for the rest of your life!

  13. I'm sure you know how to bump right? Well if you dont you try to hit by your wrists. If it hits your thumbs or fingers it will go in a oppisite direction, which you don't want to happen. Try getting a net. A family member would be best to help you.... OK now Overhand Serving. I suggest serving against a wall or with a family member. What my coaches tell me if you have a sibling, think of it as the ball is them, and pick a location on a wall, hit it as HARD as you can. Volleyball is a VERY good stress game too. Alright now with the setting, be careful setting because if you hit it wrong it will really hurt your fingers. Try to only serve if you are passing to a teamate or if you are up front and it will most likely be a good hit. One more basic...... Spiking. There's not much to say, but when you  are up close to the net and you hit the ball down hard. I know that won't help much but, that's because I don't spike.

PRactice HArd! Good luck and I hoped I helped!

  14. The way I condtition/warmup for my volleyball season is running every day. I run distance one day, then sprints the next. Speed is important in this game. Any exercises to work you legs/butt muscles will give you a huge advantage. If you can find someone to play with, do it. Go to your local park and practice serving over the volleyball nets. Just go out there and do your best because if the coach sees that you are dedicated, then it will give you better rankings over people with bad attitudes! Best of luck!
