1.) Is the esophagus mechanical digestion or chemical digestion? Why?

2.) Is the stomach mechanical digestion or chemical digestion? Why?

3.) Is the large intestine mechanical digestion or chemical digestion? Why?

  1. The esophagus is basically a tube between the mouth and the stomach. It does perform peristalsis so some squeezing, but no real digestion.

    The stomach provides enzymes and hydrochloric acid for chemical digestion. It does move in peristalsis to aid in the mixing.

    The large intestine absorbs water. No digsetion here. Nutrients were absorbed in the small intestine.


  2. 1) Mechanical, because the food is being squeezed towards the stomach.

    2) Mechanical and chemical. The stomach kneads the food and mixes it with secreted Hydrochloric acid

    3) Neither. The large intestine just absorbs nutrients and water, plus packing the f***s for transport out of the body.
