Not sure about California, but in Louisiana, one of the lowest paid states, a preschool teacher can make anywhere from $7.00/hour to about $30,000 a year.

$7.00 per hour in a day care learning center type atmosphere with little experience and no degree.  $30,000 in a public school atmosphere with a college degree, 5 years experience and state certification.  Most private schools here pay about $22,000/year.

California is typically higher, but they also have a higher cost of living.
