Just watched the end of evangelion (movie)?

Question

what the h**l is up with the ending? first he accepts everything, then him and the german girl (why is it only her name i cant remember) are the only to people left, and he tries strangling her, then he stop and she calls him disgusting... and thats it. so whats up with the ending???

Evangelion is a very bizarre series, and a lot of it is very open to interpretation. The anime is substantially different from the manga. The manga still isn't complete, and is essentially a normal "kids piloting giant robots fight monsters" series. It's well known that the director of the anime series went through a sort of period of depression, which is why the series turns very bizarre, as he injected many of the series psychological elements and his personal viewpoints.

I remember I read an indepth analysis of the series on some anime website years ago that did a very good job of trying to explain everything that's going on, but unfortunately I do not know where that is. If you have the DVD, I also suggest listening to the commentary track by some of the American staff, as they have some insights into a few things as well.
